Dr. Robert (Bob) Zubrin, Tuesday, 8-23-16 (10.35MB; download) -- We welcomed back Dr. Bob Zubrin for a full 90 minute program rather than the announced shorter 60 minute program. Dr. Zubrin started our discussion by talking about the upcoming Mars Society Conference Sept. 22-25 in Washington, DC. After describing the conference, keynote speakers, the planned debates, and the various presenter tracks, Bob began answering listener questions. Such questions ranged from the rate of progress being made on getting humans to Mars to SpaceX & Musk plans for Mars, the use of the SLS and possibly the Falcon Heavy, & the risk of waiting too long to do it causing missed opportunities. Marshall called to ask about Europe, Bob offered his perspective on the presidential race and going to Mars, then Kim called to suggest that going to the Moon might be more inspirational than Mars. Doug emailed in about possible Zubrin collaboration with those supporting lunar settlement. Bob said he would and described how he thought such collaboration might work out. We took a call from Paris, France supporting on orbit colonies over going to Mars. Artificial gravity & NASA were discussed as was using SEP, ion thrusters, and more. Alan wanted to know about dual use with the DOD for space security & a NASA humans to Mars mission. Tim was the last caller asking about the small nuclear power reactors being developed at Marshall.
