This program follows the previous "Back of the Envelope" type of shows discussing this topic. Among the topics discussed during our program included 3D printer, job displacement and what to do about it, how to do another similar Space Show program but make it interactive with 3D printing and some of the other tools Barry talked about, plus space and educational policy. We took many listener phone calls and emails which you will want to hear and follow. Erik was most critical on life support issues, our lack of technology for a closed life support system, ethical issues which we explored in detail as well as legal issues. Other parts of our discussion focused on what would happen with an emergency, getting a launch license, rescue possibilities and more. Open Lines, Sunday, 1-29-17 (14.19MB; download) -- Welcome to this two hour 4 minute Open Lines discussion. After several announcement and suggested topic discussions, we talked with several listeners on many topics. One of the main topics was yet again the Moon or Mars debate, this time with references to the program of last Sunday with Dr. Larry Kuznetz on the Mars spacesuit and Larry's comments near the end of his show as to why we should not consider the Moon as a jumping off point for Mars. Our discussion led to the Musk and SpaceX plans for going to Mars plus our present day space capabilities. A listener asked me for my thoughts on the climate change debate and this then became a discussion topic on the show. In the second segment, Marshall called to talk about what we might do once we got to the Moon or Mars, suggesting that we had no real plan nor was there at this time a business case for either destination. A listener email asked me if I had any retirement plans and what they might be, then Doug suggested by a phone call which went dad that we should be focused on more than just mining. Unfortunately, he was not able to complete his comments do to his phone quitting on him. Kim in Mexico then called in with her ideas of what we would do on the Moon and on early space settlements. Kim had much to say so don't miss all her comments. John from Freemont called to talk about the Al Globus low radiation Earth orbit I mentioned earlier. He also talked about Moon Exress getting $20 million in funding. Before the segment and show ended, Doug emailed in with a follow up to a question he had asked on an earlier show about making assumptions about China grabbing or doing certain things on the Moon and what our response might be. This time Doug referred us to the documentary movie, "Death By China" produced by Dr. Peter Navarro who is part of the Trump space landing team with the transition. Rod Pyle, Tuesday, 1-24-17 (12.28MB; download) -- We welcomed Rod Pyle back to the show to talk about his three latest books and related issues in space news and policy today. The first of his three books we talked about was "Amazing Stories Of The Space Age." This is an exciting and fun book to read going back to real stories dating from the early days of the space age. This took us into topics today related to China and other space actors plus today's policies. Next, we talked about his coffee table book, "Mars: Making Contact." This book has amazing Mars photos in it, some we have not seen before. The third book we talked about was "Blueprint for a Battlestar." This book has a layout resembling old fashioned blue prints and has designs and photos of all sorts of things from space weapons to much more. Rod discussed and highlighted many of the drawings and photos in the book. Read the full summary of this show at www.thespaceshow.com for the date January 24, 2017. Please note due to the illness of a close friend, I was unable to participate in this Hotel Mars program.
John Batchelor welcomed Dr. Linda Elkins-Tanton of Arizona State University to the program to discuss the NASA newly named Discovery mission to the all metal asteroid 16 Psyche. During the double segment program, John and Lindy discussed the mission, the potential worth of this all metallic asteroid, the solar electric propulsion to be used for it and the instrumentation that will be on the program. It will launch in 2023 and take five years so to avoid a high mass fuel payload. As a result, the spacecraft is slow, more affordable and lighter. As you will hear, it may be able to launch in 2022. Asteroid 16 Psyche is the heaviest of the M-type asteroids. Also, 16 Psyche might be the exposed iron core of a protoplanet.[2] Radar observations of the asteroid from Earth indicate an iron–nickel composition. Much was discussed about this mission and this type of asteroid so enjoy this Hotel Mars program.
Please post comments/questions on The Space Show blog for this program. You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Elkins-Tanton through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com or through her Arizona State website page.

Dr. Philip Lubin, Monday, 1-23-17 (10.61MB; download) -- We welcomed Dr. Philip Lubin to the show to discuss interstellar flight possibilities and physics. During our one segment 94 minute program, Dr. Lubin introduced us to the NASA Deep-In Directed Energy for Relativistic Interstellar Missions and the Breakthrough Starshot program. Read about these programs and much more at www.deepspace.ucsb.edu. During our program, Dr. Lubin addressed many of the challenges for interstellar flight including laser beam propulsion and beam issues. We also talked about competing technologies including anti-matter plus our guest explained the shortcoming of chemical propulsion rockets. One of the themes repeated throughout our discussion was the need for the technology to be experiencing exponential growth. Our 94 minute discussion is detailed, thorough, and most interesting. Included in the discussion was much on the interstellar spaceships to be used starting with the very small wafers to talking about human sleeper ships.
