Col. Peter Garretson (USAF) to discuss the proposed space solar power project and the DC competition. Find out more at www.d3ssp.org. During the first segment of our two hour program, Col. Garretson explained the space solar power project to us along with the D3 competition which they won. D3 stands for Development, Defense, and Diplomacy as it was "a challenge issued across the Department of Defense, Department of State, and the US Agency for International Development for the best ideas to advance U.S. diplomacy, defense and development (the 3 D’s of foreign policy)." Peter not only explained the challenge in detail but the SSP project and the why of the SSP project. Our first segment was primarily a policy segment which also addressed the economic, policy, global, humanitarian, and climate benefits of space solar power plus its potential impact on the stability and push for peace for all nations and peoples. The vision is grand, the claims were and are grand, and the excitement should such a program be undertaken is and will likely be captivating. Listen carefully to what Pete had to say, the questions asked by our co-host Chris Stone, myself and the listeners. As you will hear, the technology and methodology is flexible, no plans and designs have yet been made as this is all unfunded with the primary step of getting it on a policy docket. Peter talked about how to go about doing that in both segments of our program. We also addressed international participation, both the Chinese and Japanese SSP plans which we might have to compete with, and of course working with the United Nations COPUOS. In the second segment, we fielded listener email questions including one by Sally about the possible weaponization of the SSP technologies and maybe even the satellites. Peter spent time going through this issue, how best to combat weaponization of microwave or other beams, SSP oversight plus other security strategies. Sally's question was followed by one from Rick asking if GEO was the preferred orbit and why. Our guest talked at length about the different SSP orbital proposals, then he gave the reasoning for using the GEO orbit. We took a question from Mohammed from Amman, Jordan that also inquired about SSP orbits, the use of a laser or microwave beam, as well as putting the satellites at a Lagrange Point. Our co-host Chris asked about the Air Force reception toward the SSP project plus the reaction of the Air University at Maxwell AFB where Peter teaches. Don't miss what our guest had to say about the Air Force and the Air University. In his reply, Col. Garretson talked about what might happen when SLS winds up its work at Marshall Space Flight Center and how it might be possible to task that team with developing SSP satellites. Please read the rest of the summary @ www.thespaceshow.com

We welcomed Eric Lerner, Chief Scientist and CEO of LPP Fusion and Focus Fusion back to the show for updates as Eric was last on the show in December 2013. During the first segment of our one hour 23 minute discussion, Eric went over the basics of his fusion work with LPP Fusion (http://lppfusion.com) and the Focus Fusion Society (www.focusfusion.org). He also went into detail as to the technology, methodology, fuel, processes and funding required to produce fusion energy. At times the discussion was fairly technical but follow along using his websites, slides, and videos as these are good explanations as to what he was describing as needed to produce net energy from fusion. Questions about the fuel choices came up in this segment. Eric explained his choice to use boron and hydrogen, he talked about competing fuel choices and what his competitors were doing and using including the giant tokamak reactors such as the European ITER. Eric explained that he had progressed through the three necessary steps for creating net fusion energy with the last challenge being density. He explained this in detail during this segment. He also talked about impurities and the flaw he was encountering regarding the plasma and vaporization. He then described his tungsten experiments and where that had taken him in perfecting the needed process. In addition, Erick discussed the bake-out problem and solution. Mr. Lerner was asked about funding issues as we neared the end of the first segment. He talked about the LPP burn rate, number of employees they have and could use with better funding, along with their current program, "Fund A Shoot." Find out more about this project at http://lppfusion.com/money/donate-to-help-the-research. In the second segment, a listener asked Eric about government funding for his project. Don't miss what he said about this possibility as he once had some JPL funding. He then discussed the method the most likely method of distributing power once the project was commercial. He talked about decentralized power with communities getting their own off the shelf 5 mw generator. We talked about the challenges in doing this including opposition from energy companies, utilities, the Public Utilities Commission in the states and other involved local, state, and federal government agencies and organizations. Eric spoke to the need for education and outreach which he said is one of the main focuses of the Focus Fusion Society. Andrew asked Eric about competing with solar power. Eric had much to say about solar power. He explained why in his opinion solar power would not be price competitive with fusion due to large infrastructure and maintenance costs. Eric was asked about engineering and commercial breakeven (b/e) for fusion. Our guest explained why he preferred the terms scientific feasibility and net power back. He thought that with proper funding, the engineering phase two from lab to a working genera

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Kim Holder to the program to provide us with an in-depth look and analysis of her Moonwards project. Follow along with us by visiting her website, www.moonwards.com. During the first segment of our 1 hour 36 minute discussion, Kim started out by providing us with the history and background as to her having created the Moonwards project. It was an interesting story, including her watching videos of successful people she admired. She saw an Elon Musk video with Elon talking about going to Mars which caused her to pause since going to Mars did not make much sense to her. The result was the development of the Moonwards project which is an ongoing development project. For the rest of the first segment, Kim went into detail about Moonwards. Kim said that "Moonwards has vast potential, but it will take a great deal of work for it to live up to that. By pouring myself into it, i hope i can grow up in a way i didn't when i was younger because of health problems. In the same way, i believe we won't find the maturity to care for our planet, and move on to greater things in our future, until we pour ourselves into a project that changes our perspective and makes us see our own potential." (http://moonwards.com/about.html#about). Kim spoke to changing our perspective to enable us to have a broader and more accurate view of our place is the cosmos. Her emerging Moonwards project can help facilitate this change, especially as Moonwards grows and more and more people take part in the Moonwards interactive opportunities and eventually start going to the Moon. She spoke to facilitating our getting back to the Moon. As for the Moonwards website, she said it was open source so people can easily contribute to it, a process she explained in detail. In addition, she talked about the Virtual Moon Colony Project described on the Moonwards home page. Kim stressed that collaboration with contributors to Moonwards was very important to the success of the project. Listeners asked her several email questions. One listener wanted to know about her time line for returning to the Moon. She thought it would take 10-15 years. I brought up the perspective represented by the student I have mentioned on other programs about damaging the Moon by our going there and "exploiting" it so we should leave it as is. I asked Kim how she would respond to this student. Don't miss what she said regarding the student's perspective. Kim then spoke to changing the Moon by human activity. Don't miss what she said about lunar changes as a result of human lunar development & exploration. In the second segment, Kim was asked about O'Neill colonies in orbit rather than going to the lunar surface. She said lunar development facilitated orbital development because of less gravity on the Moon and the need for radiation shielding that equals mass. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. Welcome to our last Open Lines program for February 2016. After putting forth some suggested topics, our first caller was Johanthon Pacer who wanted to discuss his Enceladus &Triton moon theory regarding excess heat and the possibility of gigantic naturally occurring electric generators on the moons. The balance of our first segment was devoted to Johanthon and his theory which he discussed in detail. Note that Johanthon would like substantive feedback and commentary regarding his theory so please post your comments and thoughts about what he said in the comments section for this program now that it is archived. If you want to talk with or exchange information directly with our caller, let me know and I will introduce the two of you via email. Johanthon's theory is very interesting and our discussion was also most interesting so don't miss it. In the second segment, we had only one caller, John from Ft. Worth. John first wanted to talk about STEM and STEAM. He was asking why the move to put art (A) in STEM for STEAM. I shared my thoughts with him on the issue but as I said on air, I don't actually know the origins of the push to use STEAM rather than STEM. Our STEAM discussion included a look at modern education through college and more. I asked John for his thoughts on our first segment caller's moon theory. John thought it was interesting and raised a few questions based on what caller Johanthon said. For the remainder of the program, I discussed two magazine articles of interest as there were no further callers nor did I receive any emails from listeners. The first article appeared in the February 2016 issue of Aerospace America and is titled "Liberating Cubesats." This article does a good job of summarizing what is going on in the small launcher industry, the players, their status on bringing their launcher to market, and the target market that will be served by the different small satellite launchers. It is a very interesting and informative article about this industry and the development of small launchers. The next article I recommended appeared in the March 2016 Smithsonian Air&Space Magazine. The article, "How to Land a Building on Mars," can be found on page 28. Given recent Space Show guest comments on how landing large payloads on Mars has been resolved, I thought this would be a good article for listeners to read for a due diligence check on the issue of landing large payloads on Mars. This subject will be discussed further when Dr. Rob Manning returns to The Space Show on Monday, March 28. You should be able to find both articles online. Please post your comments/questions in the comment section for this archived program on The Space Show website.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed John Strickland back to the show to discuss Mars colonization with transportation to and from Mars. During the first segment of this 1 hour 31 minute discussion, we started out by John responding to my question about our current TRL for getting humans on Mars. This opened the door for John to talk about our TRL today as well as in the near future, entry, descent, and landing on Mars which he said was solved by landing with retro-propulsion, plus he made many additional claims in support of getting humans to Mars fairly soon. I pointed out to John that the retro-propulsion landings for Mars were far from operational nor was the problem solved, then I suggested he listen to the upcoming show Rob Manning who is one of the architects of this type of potential landing on Mars. John based his conclusion on retro-propulsion landings on Mars on SpaceX first stage recovery and to some degree, the same for Blue Origin. Let us know what you think about this by posting your comment on the blog. John also talked about propellant depots and their usage for Mars HSF missions. John described his concept of a high mass mission and why. This prompted Doug to check in with us with a series of questions throughout the show regarding John's ideas. Crew safety was another topic during this segment. This was followed by Joshua asking about the economic drivers for the Mars mission John was talking about. Don't miss what John said in response to Joshua's question. In the second segment, John was asked if we should first go to Mars or do an O'Neill colony. John suggested both should be done ASAP. Don't miss his explanation. BJohn asked John about the Martian moons. John had much to say about the mons and how best to go there and use them to facilitate the humans to Mars missions. Jack emailed in a question about the recent House Science Committee hearing on the Space Leadership Preservation Act that featured Dr. Mike Griffin and Col. Eileen Collins answering the congressional questions. Jack's purpose in referencing the hearings was to ask John what he thought of Mike's response dealing with when we will be ready to send a crew to Mars. You can watch the 2 hour 15 minute hearing at https://science.house.gov/legislation/hearings/full-committee-hearing-space-leadership-preservation-act-and-need-stability. Doug joined in with email comments about a Mars flyby mission saying to do that with a crew would not require the testing program Mike suggested for humans to Mars. Later in the segment, John was asked if he was hearing credible rumors about the SpaceX plans to go to Mars which will be announced at the September IAC meeting in Mexico. John talked about different versions of SpaceX rockets that might be involved but he had nothing specific to say about the SpaceX plans. So we all wait for the big announcement. John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Allan Needell, Curator of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Space Division, to discuss both the Apollo 11 command module graffiti which has been uncovered plus the museum's 3D Digitization Program. During our ten minute discussion, Dr. Needell talked about some of the scribbled messages on the walls of Columbia having been known before, but in the process of undertaking the 3D Digitization Program, other messages were recently discovered. Because nobody had been in the capsule for decades, they were forgotten and unseen. Dr. Needell did talk with Mike Collins and Buzz about the messages. Most were written by Mike Collins. Our guest went into detail about the 3D Digitization Program and what it will eventually mean for people not present in the museum. You can email Mr. Batchelor or Dr. Needell through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com. Dr. Needell can also be reached at his museum website page, https://airandspace.si.edu/staff/allan-needell. In the first segment of our 1 hour 27 minute program we had two callers proposing vastly different topics plus Tim called near the end of the segment to talk about space settlement. The first caller was Patrick from Defense Daily. He proposed programming focusing on the military and several related topics. Patrick was very interesting and I will be following up his call with a Space Show invitation. The second call was from Aario from Iran though now he lives in Germany but was visiting in the States. He proposed being a guest to talk about repurposing NASA to focus on space infrastructure. I was skeptical about this happening, suggested it might take an Act of Congress to change the National Space Policy to do that and referenced the efforts to repurpose NASA to focus on space settlement which I also don't think will happen. I suggested Aario do his homework on his idea, load up with facts and other information and we would exchange notes on his idea when he was back in Germany. We could discuss his being a guest to put forth his ideas despite my being skeptical that his idea would gain any traction at all. However, first, I want to see some facts or analysis why he wants to repurpose NASA for building infrastructure other than it being his personal preference. What do you think about his idea for repurposing NASA and being a guest on the show to discuss it in detail? Post your thoughts on the blog. Tim from Huntsville was our next caller. Tim had picked up on the space settlement comments with the previous caller and wanted to say that in his opinion, Congress did not care about it. He also commented on the college student space views that I mentioned with our previous caller re exploitation and fixing things up on Earth before going into space but also making sure we don't ruin space as we have done to Earth. As I told Tim, I'm hoping this student will come on the show to express her views but we will see. In the second segment, Mike from Phoenix called and proposed being a guest on the show after Elon Musk announces his Mars plans at the IAC later this year. He will be at the IAC for the announcement so I told him to take good notes and to come on and tell us about it. He also suggested Dr. Philip Lubin from UC Santa Barbara on directed energy propulsion from his presentation at the 2015 NIAC Fall Symposium. There were no other calls or emails for this show so I used the time to make a few announcements, go over the future Space Show schedule and to promote the remaining programs for this week, including Hotel Mars focusing on Apollo graffiti. In addition, I let listeners know that I have only one autographed copy left of Dr. Dewar's book, "The Nuclear Rocket." Read the rest of this summary @ www.thespaceshow.com.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Phil Smith back to the program to discuss market and industry analysis for space tourism, the launcher industry, cubesats and much more. During the first segment of our 1 hour and 49 minute program, we started off discussing space tourism. First, our guest put the space tourism industry into economic perspective as part of the overall $324 billion space industry. We then talked about suborbital space tourism, the unveiling of the Virgin Galactic SS2 Unity a few days ago, plus the potential of the industry. While our guest did have things to say about Virgin Galactic, XCOR, and Blue Origin, The Tauri Group does not pick winners. Our space tourism discussion, including market and economic analysis, took the better part of the first segment. However, we also talked about orbital tourism and the impact on space tourism industry growth by lowering prices per questions asked by Dr. Doug when he called the show. Included in the price discussion was the probability of lowering prices and by how much given venture capital and ROI pressure on many of the companies. One thing our guest pointed out was that they showed the tourism part of the industry being larger than the research side of the industry using the same vehicles. Listener David asked if Blue Origin's recent success might impact Virgin Galactic plans and if so, how and by how much. He also wanted to know the longer term impact Blue might have on SpaceX. In winding up our suborbital discussion, Mr. Smith said two things had happened to change the outlook for the industry. First, hardware was now flying even if only under experimental licenses. The second big thing was the large amount of investment in the industry by non-space players though it was unclear if this was sustainable money. Our guest also said "Big Data" was getting most of the investment. He provided us with examples of this and a clear definition of big data. Regarding the launch industry, he said 2015 was a good year with 86 orbital launches though most of the launches were government. GEO satellites was the largest share on the commercial side and they were the largest revenue producers. He talked about a possible glut in launch vehicles with 60 such vehicles in operation or being produced on a global level. While smallsat and cubesat launches were increasing, he also talked about cluster or constellation launches which means lots more satellites on one launch which would have the result of lowering the number of launches but possibly launching more satellites. Before the segment ended, George from Boston asked about forecast track records along with the Tauri Group track record. Our guest provided us with examples of track records, including one dating back to early Air Force fusion energy studies. He said Tauri Group track records were proprietary for customers requesting the information. Read the rest of this review @ www.thespaceshow.com.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Dr. Markus Voelter to the program to discuss his flight experience aboard the NASA-DLR Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), along with his Omega Tau Podcasts. During the first segment of our 1 hour 45 minute discussion, Markus described the SOFIA program, the DLR-NASA relationship and responsibilities for SOFIA, plus he went in to significant detail about his ten hour flight experience aboard the SOFIA observation flight from Palmdale, CA. In fact, our first segment is all about flying onboard the special Boeing 747SP SOFIA aircraft. Among the topics discussed and covered as a result what Markus told us and listener questions were the SOFIA public outreach program, the advantages of using the 747SP, how the plane gets to 43,000 feet at the top of the stratosphere, the special infrared telescope with its design, gimbals, and size, how the telescope is operated both manually and remotely, SOFIA routes and air traffic control issues, infrared astronomy, why infrared on the SOFIA 747SP rather than on a satellite or even a balloon, the special FIFI-LS imaging spectrometer, SOFIA science, operational crew, science crew, visitors/teachers onboard the SOFIA flights, food on the flight, flight logistics, and lots more. Markus did ten hours of podcasting on this flight which you can listen to at http://omegataupodcast.net/touren-tours/sofia. There is also a special SOFIA slide show with photos regarding SOFIA and our guest's experience at www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NjZOPKuh4k. There were specific listener questions about the telescope mirror exposed to the atmosphere since the side of the plane opens up during the viewing periods. Marshall wanted to know if SOFIA scientists had a proprietary period of use with their observation data, and then Luis wanted to know about SOFIA financial problems given the project has faced cancellation several times. This allowed Markus to elaborate on the SOFIA project's high operating costs, then Markus and I engaged in a mini discussion about the "game" politicians play in approving and funding projects knowing the expenses may be downplayed only to face cancelling the projects later on when reality sets in and some may have a different use in mind for the money they are spending on the older project. Julian wanted to know if there were actual cost comparisons for running and operating SOFIA versus a similar telescope on a satellite. In addition, since Markus said he did not offer transcripts for his podcasts, a subject the two of us discussed in detail for a few minutes as we had similar thoughts on the matter, Julian suggested his podcasts get German cultural funding support for transcripts. Don't miss what Markus said about this idea. During the first segment, we also covered lots of telescope and 747SP logistical topics. Please read the rest of the summary @ www.thespaceshow.com.
