This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dr. Bill Rowe back to the show for this nearly two hour discussion regarding medical risks for spacewalks and astronauts. During the first segment, Dr. Rowe focused on a possible astronaut magnesium deficiency that would cause cardiovascular problems, especially with a space walk. Dr. Rowe explained why, talked about the adrenalin levels being 2 times those on Earth plus decreased plasma levels. He spent some time explaining these issues, their relationships to one another and why he believes them to be risk factors. In his discussion, he referenced health conditions for some of the Apollo era astronauts, plus he talked about microgravity issues and a possible mitigation strategy of using I.V. saline with the astronauts in space. At times the discussion was medically and technically complex but Bill broke it down for those of us not in the medical profession. He also talked about his experience over decades of practicing medicine and being a diagnostician, referencing many of his relevant patient studies along the way, including for example his work with Sy Mah. Dr. Doug sent in an email regarding dehydration and a headward fluid shift. Toward the end of the first segment, Dr. Doug called in to suggest that if an astronaut did an EVA in a pressurized rover vehicle rather than an Apollo era spacesuit, adrenalin levels and other risks would be mitigated. This was an interesting discussion with Dr. Rowe who did not agree with Doug's premise. Listen and let us know what you think by posting on TSS blog. In the second segment, Dr. Rowe started off saying more about the use of I.V. saline with astronauts, a topic he discussed in the first segment. . BJohn had several email questions asking about spacesuit gloves and exoskeleton gloves given what Dr. Rowe was saying about finger tips and related items. Other topics discussed in this segment included the ISS, the one year Twins Study, Vitamin D usage in space, iron risks for spaceflight, plus the implication for some of these space risks to the problem of terrestrial urban pollution. As he has done before, Bill advocated for the need to have subcutaneous pharmaceutical administration for astronauts, then he addressed issues relating to the calcium-magnesium ratio. We welcomed Dr. Lewis Dartnell to discuss his book, "The Knowledge: How To Rebuild Civilization In The Aftermath Of A Cataclysm," then applying it to starting up a space settlement regardless of where the settlement might be located. During our 68 minute discussion, Dr. Dartnell started out by giving us the background to his having written the book, some of the applicable constraints for the book, and that it was written for terrestrial events though there were ways to extrapolate some of it to space settlement issues. Dr. Dartnell explained what it would take to reboot civilization depending on why it was destroyed. He listed three possible sources of destruction. One was a viral epidemic or pandemic, another was nuclear war, and another was being hit by a large asteroid or something similar. He also said it might be easier to reboot after a pandemic because infrastructure would still be standing and largely available for use whereas with the other two, destruction would be overwhelming. We talked about skill sets needed to reboot, then we talked about the minimum size for a new community to start over. Here we extrapolated to space, exploring what it would take to start a space settlement. The initial numbers were high but not as high as what would be needed later on. The need for genetic diversity was also high. Several times he referred to needing more women than men for breeding to seed the new settlement, but without genetic diversity and in light of possible in-breeding to get the early numbers up, generations of humans might be born that were genetically weak and that could be a problem. Genetic diversity, needing more women than men, microgravity and radiation issues were just a few of the challenges for the new space settlement. Past the initial number to get the settlement going, to sustain it there would be a need for thousands in the community. You don't want to miss this discussion as it was an eye opener. Don't miss why he said he would rather start a new Earth settlement even after a horrific cataclysm than a Martian settlement. He said the Earth settlement would be far easier no matter what the challenges than the Mars settlement. Dr. Dartnell then talked about the possibility that someday an Earth-like exoplanet would be discovered so we compared starting a settlement there as opposed to Mars. To make this comparison, we zeroed out all issues relating to space transportation. You might be surprised by what Dr. Dartnell concluded. Later we compared a lunar settlement with the other two. Much of our discussion revolved around the fact that Earth was and is habitable and even after the horrific event, would remain habitable. John Batchelor and I welcomed Dr. Robert Pappalardo, the NASA JPL Mission Director for the upcoming Europa Mission. John started out by asking our guest why the need to go to Europa. Dr. Pappalardo explained the significance of going to Europa, the science that will be done as a result of this mission, the search for life which may exist in the subsurface oceans and more. I asked our guest about the mission's instruments which Dr. Pappalardo then briefly discussed. He also spoke about the need to learn more about the oxygen cycle regarding the possibility of organic molecules. We talked about the Europa mission orbiting around Europa 45 times or so, coming very close to the surface, as it orbits Jupiter since the mission does not have a lander. Bob also spoke to high degree of sensitivity of the sensors and what they can do when they fly very low over the Europa surface. As for travel time to Europa, it depends on the launch vehicle used. Using the new SLS which is under design would take about 3.5 years. Something like an Atlas 5 might take up to 9 years. Please post comments/questions about this program on TSS blog above. We welcomed Dennis Wingo back to the show to discuss his recent blog article at https://denniswingo.wordpress.com/2015/08/05/secular-stagnation-and-space-a-way-beyond-our-current-economic-plateau, Secular Stagnation and Space: A Way Beyond Our Current Economic Plateau." During the first segment of our 1 hour 54 minute program, Dennis started out by defining secular stagnation as used today but also as coined back in December 1938 by then Harvard economics professor, Dr. Alvin Hansen, in his paper titled "Economic Progress and Declining Population Growth" (see this link for the March 1939 publication of his paper, www.jstor.org/stable/1806983?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents). This discussion led to Dennis providing us with both a pre-WW2 economic summary of the U.S. economy, then a post war U.S. economic summary. The latter discussion had a special focus on the years including our early space program with a high degree of technological investment up to the present where new technology investment has been declining. Dennis provided us with economic stats and facts to support what he was talking about. Given the current status of our economy and work force, Dennis advocated for a substantial new technology spending increase with a significant focus on space development technology. Later, he included specialized job training but you will hear more about that later. During this segment, Dennis received many email questions by the listeners on the topics being discussed. Note that our discussion was much broader than just focusing and talking about space economic development. In the second segment, Ben started us off with an email claiming that the labor force and culture of the U.S. today was vastly different from that of the 50s -80s so looking for a solution that worked back then would likely not work today. Dennis spent most of the segment both refuting and responding to this question because it brought up the subject of vocational training which was prevalent during the early period but not now. Dennis explained why vocational training was so important and why it had been decimated. I once again shared my experiences lobbying the California legislature to pass workforce education (the new name for vocational training) legislation. Dennis advocated for the Do It Yourself (DIY) community which is growing around the country along with the Maker movement with events like Maker Faire. He also talked about meaningful vocational training for job training for young people not working or wanting to improve their work and career prospects. We welcomed back Dr. Madhu Thangavelu to discuss the Planetary Defense Team and their work at the ISU Summer Session which was held this year at Ohio University. About 20 minutes into the show, he was joined by one of the student participants in the session, Tihomir Dimitrov (Tisho). Madhu explained that he gave the team an impossible scenario to solve. The scenario was that a comet was heading toward Earth and would impact us in two yeas. The students had to come up with a mitigation strategy. The first segment of our program talks about the considerations, the plans, & the mitigation means which included directed energy and modified nuclear weapons. Listeners and I pushed both Dr. Thangalevu and Tisho on these two strategies, plus I challenged them on their goal of changing the world by engaging in planetary defense of the Earth, the Moon, and even Mars. I kept asking them why they don't improve humanity in Africa and the Middle East because as host, I can play the part of the devil's advocate to challenge their reasoning and thinking. In the end, it seemed that the solution to the problem was based on how much work was done in the time leading up to the discovery of the incoming comet. Our guests also talked about evacuation strategies and making touch decisions for the good of society and the planet but maybe not so good for the city, town, region or people that get hit by the comet. Its an interesting discussion and I am sure all of us would have enjoyed being in this summer session class. In the second segment, Madhu talked about his upcoming design studio class with the theme this year of exploring the role of the Moon in our future space activity. He talked about the role of governments in making the Moon part of our future in space as compared to the role of private companies and entrepreneurs. At one point he said the key would be in how we change the way we look at space. When asked by a listener, Dr. Thangalevu clarified that he was talking about the role of the Moon in human space activity, not just robotic missions. In the first segment of the program, I suggested a few topics and then talked about our Website Modernization Program and the new fully searchable database to deliver archival quality archives. John Hunt was our first caller to discuss the book "The Martian," plus his take on Dr. Woodward's mach thruster work given he had just finished reading Dr. Woodward's book. John had much to say about "The Martian," especially from a technical perspective. It is an interesting and fun discussion. His comments on mach thrusters were somewhat skeptical but he was still thinking about it and Dr. Woodward's work as detailed in his book. He will give us a report when he has reached his "final" decision. John's feedback on this is interesting given his knowledge of physics. He was asked what it might mean if Dr. Woodward's work was to be verified and commercialized. He said it would be revolutionary and would open up the solar system to space travel. Near the end of the first segment, John also mentioned EM drive, the challenges for out of box theories and work when going up against science orthodoxy & related issues. In the second segment, we heard from Jon in NJ about new uses for space shuttle main engines, SLS, and reusability which he said did not appear to be something NASA was interested in at this time given their engine use plans. Another discussion topic that came up was comparing a Return on Investment (ROI) to a Return on Exploration (ROE). I mentioned that government projects are not typically discussed in terms of an ROI and that it was very difficult to calculate a ROE because for government, that includes many things, variables, and ways of calculating outcomes. I mentioned an earlier Mars Society paper I did years ago on comparing Apollo to the school breakfast program and Hoover Dam. I addressed calculating benefits, outcomes and an economic return for each of those three projects. BJohn emailed in a comment about returns going back centuries for Mars exploration, then we got into discussing the technical knowledge and awareness of society in general.
