We welcomed Michael Mackowski to The Space Show to discuss his book "Adventures in Space Advocacy," space advocacy in history through to the future, spacecraft model building and much more. During the first segment of our 90 minute program, Michael talked about growing up as a "child of Apollo" and being inspired by our early space program. He went on to get an EE degree and to work in the industry. He said it was an exacting time, especially when the Galileo Jupiter mission finally happened. He talked about the start of organizations such as L5, The Planetary Society, AIAA, and his own early ventures into space advocacy which are detailed in his book, available at Amazon at www.amazon.com/Adventures-Space-Advocacy-Personal-Activism/dp/1511564911/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1438189701&sr=8-1. He talked about moving, heading to Phoenix and engaging in space advocacy once again after a brief pause when he was in Washington, DC. This led us to a discussion about individual advocacy efforts as compared to group or organizational efforts. Michael was asked how he has sold human spaceflight to a general audience, his most receptive audience, and lobbying congress. Our guest spent some time discussing the challenges in advocating human spaceflight to the general public so don't miss this discussion. Space tourism came up as a probable kick starter once the industry starts commercial operations. Michael thought that space tourism could provide a crucial boost for industry support even outside the space community. In the second segment, we talked about Michael's interest in spaceflight models. If you visit his website, www.space-city-mike.net, you can click on scale models on the right side menu bar (http://space-city-mike.net/modeling). Michael described the industry, licensing challenges, specialty model builders and more. He also talked about using models in the form of make and take kits when talking to young students about space. Model building through 3D printing was discussed, then I switched the topic to inquire about his success in outreach with adults and children. He said 5-7th grade was the best group to talk with as high school was probably too late. As for speaking to adult groups, he said it was usually about entertainment but that it seldom produced advocacy action on the part of the adults hearing the talk. I seconded that experience given my talks with adults on space this and that. Near the end, we talked trends, the increasing influence of social media, passion, and connecting pace to our future. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Michael though his website or me.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dr. Robert Pappalardo to the show to discuss Europa and the upcoming Europa Mission by JPL which is now in the development phase. During the first segment of our 1 hour 27 minute program, Dr. Pappalardo talked about the origins of the NASA JPL Europa mission now in the development phase. He briefly described the experiments & instruments planned for the mission, then answered questions about the mission such as will the mission search for life. In response to this question, he said it would search for simple life through an indirect means which he described more fully in the second segment of the show. Our guest talked about having learned lots from the earlier Galileo spacecraft, especially about the Europa magnetic field and the likelihood of the oceans consisting of saltwater. Dr. Pappalardo also talked about the structure of Europa with the icy surface, oceans under the ice ad then a rocky base under the oceans. Dr. Pappalardo brought up the tidal heating of Europa and spoke to that quite a bit during the show. He talked about chemical energy and nutrients which may support simple life in the Europa oceans. Listener Joe asked how Europa could be in a habitable zone, even for simple life, given its cold temperatures. Our guest said Europa was expanding the definition of habitable zone & that the tidal heating was crucial to the possibility of finding simple life molecules. Don't miss his complete response to this question. We talked mission timeline which was from about 2022 to the mid-2020s. We also learned that the Europa launch window was every 13 months. Our guest was asked about transit time to Europa. He said it depended on the rocket. With SLS it would be less than 3 years. Another rocket would take at least 3.5 years or longer. We also discussed bandwidth issues for getting data, images, and video back to Earth. I asked about the possibility of using cubesats as part of the Europa mission, then Bob talked about the radiation challenge which he said was significant because Jupiter acts as a giant particle accelerator. Don't miss this discussion, especially the part abbot how much ice would be needed for effective shielding. Also, the Europa satellite will come as close as 25KM to the surface of Europa. In the second segment, Bob went into detail about the scientific instruments that will comprise the Europa mission. He took us through each one in detail so don't miss it. The radar pushes the technology envelope. So does the mass spectrometer. Harry wanted to know if a plutonium RTG would be used for power and if they were anticipating Cassini like protests. Bob said that they would be using solar power. Read the rest of the summary @ www.thespaceshow.com or http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Rex Ridenoure back to the show to discuss Ecliptic Enterprise, LightSail, the NewSpace Conference & more. During the first segment of our 1 hour 33 minute discussion. I started our discussion by asking Rex how Ecliptic got the LightSail contract from The Planetary Society. Rex relayed the story to us of their involvement with LightSail & I am sure you will find it interesting. This discussion led Rex to update us on Ecliptic activities with their size reduction program for their avionics and their work on cubesat projects. Rex talked about their customer and project base and why they don't have foreign launcher contracts or relationships. ITAR!! He talked about their having been denied ITAR clearance in the past so they don't even bother obtaining it anymore. Rex talked about some of their camera space projects including LCross, transmitting data back via the DSN and the limitations because their cameras could work all the way to Pluto and beyond but the data transmission rate and capacity to do that for video is not available. We then returned to the LightSail project which Rex described in some detail during the balance of our segment. Rex also has suggested we read the blog articles on LightSail via Jason Davis on The Planetary Society website. www.planetary.org/about/staff/jason-davis.html and look for his posts on LightSail. By the way, it is an excellent blog and I recommend you add it to your regular reading list. In the second segment, Rex provided us with an overview of the SFF NewSpace Conference and I totally agreed with what he said having also attended it. In my opinion, it was the very best of all the SFF-NewSpace conferences I've attended since the late 90's. As part of his summary of the conference, I asked his opinion on the Dr. Linda billings Scientific American article that attacked SFF, NewSpace, space settlement, etc. Here is the article in case you missed it: www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-inexcusable-jingoism-of-american-spaceflight-rhetoric. Let us know on TSS blog what you think of Dr. Billing's article and what Rex had to say about it. Please be respectful and civil, no name calling, even if you strongly disagree with either Dr. Billings or Rex. Since our show ended, Shubber Ali, the original Space Cynic, posted a reply to Dr. Billings on the Space Cynics website. Check it out as I will add all of this to the Open Lines discussion for Sunday, August 2: https://spacecynic.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/the-inexcusability-of-poor-reading-comprehension. As the show neared the conclusion, Rex summarized key points & highlights of discussion. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. Rex can be reached through me or the Ecliptic website, www.eclipticenterprises.com.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Jon Goff back to the show for Altius Space-Machine updates and more. Make sure you follow along with us at his website, www.altius-space.com. During the first segment of our 90 minute discussion, Jon brought us up on Altius activities since his last time as a guest on the show in March 2013. We discussed the projects listed on his website home page, Prospector, Lisa, the Robotic Manipulator, and EMBARC-2. I asked him for updates on Sticky Boom and how the new projects related to Sticky Boom. As you will hear, Jon and his team are engaged in several innovative projects. Listeners wanted to ask Jon about fuel depots so that topic contributed to both our first and second segments. Later in the first segment, Doug called to compare the Falcon Heavy with the use of depots, suggesting the Falcon Heavy would be more cost effective to LEO than using depots. This was an interesting discussion on this topic so don't miss it. ISRU was discussed as was aerobraking coming back from the Moon. In the second segment, Joe had the lead off question asking Jon if they were planning to engage in cubesats and Earth-imaging. Jon's reply included a discussion of his Big Vision concept for his company and how he wants to contribute to the space industry. Carl in Tucson asked Jon about using Sticky Boom or one of other concepts to get rid of LEO space debris. Following that discussion, Jon told us about his Private Placement plans for his MAGE (Mechanical Assistant for Glovebox Experiments) project, where Altius is trying to adapt some COTS robotics and 3d vision solutions for use inside the Microgravity Science Glovebox on the ISS, and on the 3DOF STEM Arm testbed that they wanted to use for testing various Sticky Boom capture mechanisms on an air-bearing table. Another listener asked Jon about building launch vehicles for cubesats. Wayne asked about SBIRs, exceptions for those from outside the U.S. and foreign government funds for companies like Altius. As we were nearing an end to our program, I asked Jon for his five year forecast for the cubesat industry, then the same for his company. Jon had much to say on this topic, including talking about ADS-B ground stations, SpaceX, One Web, smallsats beyond LEO into MEO and GEO. As we were ending, Harry asked how independent Jon was from NASA policy, the administrator, etc. We concluded our discussion with Jon mentioning possible future hiring needs and his thoughts on having started up his own business five years ago. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Jon through his website, me, or the private placement address he gave out on air.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed back Dr. Jim Woodward to the program to discuss the Mach Effect, Mach thrusters and drive, and breakthrough propulsion. During our discussion, Dr. Woodward mentioned his book, "Making Starships and Stargates which you can order at http://ssi.org/exotic-propulsion-initiative as this allows SSI to get a royalty payment on the sale of the book. If you buy the book through Amazon using TSS/OGLF portal, The Space Show gets a percentage of the sales price of the book. In addition, the Charles Platt article, "Strange thrust: the unproven science that could propel our children into space" can be found here: http://boingboing.net/2014/11/24/the-quest-for-a-reactionless-s.html. Finally, Dr. Woodward mentioned the paper written by Dr. Heidi Fearn, "New Theoretical Results for the Mach Effect Thruster." You can download this paper at www.researchgate.net/publication/280134421_New_Theoretical_Results_for_the_Mach_Effect_Thruster. Note that in the final minutes of our program, Dr. Woodward spoke very softly and we were unable to get some of what he said as part of his final comments. While the 1 hour 56 minute program was divided into two segments, this summary will be in one segment only and short as the papers above tell the story. I urge you to read them and become familiar with Dr. Woodward's work either before or after listening to this discussion which was at times very technical and heavy in the theoretical physics fields for gravitational forces, electromagnetic forces and more as he described the Mach Effect. In addition to the physics, since Dr. Woodward's work is dependent on funding so he spent a good amount of time in both segments answering questions and telling us what it was like trying to get funding, approved proposals, etc. for cutting edge work or even work considered to be out of the box or on the fringe. His realistic assessment of the challenges posed by his and similar work goes to the point of why we don't see more out of the box science & advanced projects being financed. In addition to the physics and funding discussions, we talked timelines for his having commercial uses for small Mach thrusters which would start off servicing satellites. This discussion covered both segments. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can contact Dr. Woodward through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com or his Cal State Fullerton website.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dr. Jack Burns to the program to discuss lunar policy, public and commercial missions, the international momentum for going to the Moon and more. During the first segment of the 1 hour 23 minute show, Dr. Burns responded to my initial question as to why we have not returned to the Moon since Apollo ended. He provided us with a comprehensive overview going back to the Cold War period, our technology readiness level at the time, the costs involved in going to the Moon, and much more. He also talked about the unique drivers at the time for space, drivers which don't exist today. We then discussed today's drivers for both public and private/commercial programs along with today's economic and technology readiness level. Don't miss his analysis. Dr. Burns did say (several times during our discussion) that international support for lunar missions, both robotic and human, was growing. He also referred to The Global Exploration Roadmap (www.nasa.gov/pdf/591067main_GER_2011_small_single.pdf) several times during the discussion. Later, lunar exploration was discussed and Dr. Burns talked about scientific drivers and the stepping stone concept. He said the Moon was a crucial stepping stone to other solar system projects and destinations. Listener Jerry sent in a note based on the YouTube video of our guest about using the Moon for the exploration of the cosmos (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8BrhYOaAkko). Dr. Burns took time to describe his DARE project (The Dark Ages Radio Explorer). For information on this project, see http://lunar.colorado.edu/dare/mission.html. Listeners asked our guest to explain why the lunar farside was so good for communication and various arrays. Don't miss his explanation. Later in the segment we talked about cislunar space, Orion missions, timelines, and even lunar communication latency. We also talked about Mars missions and at one point our guest said going to Mars without first learning things on the Moon increases risk for the mission and those going to Mars. Doug called with a series of comments, then BJohn asked why lunar landings were so rare (from his perspective). In the second segment, Catherine asked Dr. Burns for his top three science missions and commercial mission were he in charge of lunar policy. After Dr. Burns responded to Catherine's question, Connie wanted to know about new theories on how the Moon was created. BJohn asked about the launcher selected for the DARE project plus other lunar related propulsion and primary/secondary payload requirements. I asked Jack about the use of cubesats in lunar missions and just how it important was it for the general public to support a return to the Moon policy. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dr. Doug Plata back as our guest to discuss his paper which is on TSS blog for your perusal, "Achieving Early Earth Independence Through ISRU and Sufficient Supply. During the first segment of our 1 hou 45 minute program, Doug told us the genesis of his ideas and concepts culminating in his submitting his paper to the NASA Challenge InnoCentive Challenge (www.innocentive.com/ar/challenge/9933746). After referencing the NASA Challenge, Doug started describing his ideas in detail. Much of what he described he said was summarized in the Introduction of his paper. We talked about both the Moon and Mars but Doug explained that the competition was focused on Mars so he also focused on Mars though he still supports the Moon and cislunar development as the rational and initial starting points. Issues he discussed included supplies, types of potential habitats, the definition of and clarifications for mass independence including defining both self-sufficient and self-sustaining. He also brought up the earth return option and more. BJohn sent in several questions but his initial one asking about becoming 90% Earth independent led to a most interesting discussion. While Doug's paper does not have page numbers, check out Table 3, "Estimated Equivalent Mass Independence. Doug took us through the critical numbers and his analysis so don't miss this important discussion. In the second segment, Doug suggested three rationales for the settlement. One was to push technologies needed for sustainable living in space. The second was the big one according to his perspective and focused on reducing the resupply costs for the settlement. The third one was also big and focused on assuring survival of the human species. He discussed each rational in detail. As part of the discussion, he referenced a space settlement as an insurance policy for humans, he talked about the earth return option, radiation, GCRs, and more. He also showed that by leaving the crew on Mars for an extra year, the mission would be less costly. Listen to his discussion about this and see if you concur with him. Doug was asked about the previous program with Al Globus and LEO settlements, especially over the equator. He said that such settlements, while potentially interesting, cannot be self-sufficient or Earth independent and his focus was on gaining Earth independence. Again, don't miss this discussion. Gravity, artificial gravity and spin rates were discussed as was the concept of self-sustaining versus self-sufficient for a colony. Doug advocated for using the word colony rather than settlement but I took issue with that, especially if one hopes to communicate with people including Congress outside the space industry. The rest of the summary is @ www.thespaceshow.com or http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com.
