David Hook, Tuesday, 2-17-15 (46.23MB; download) -- Guest: David Hook Topics: UAVs and proposed FAA UAV regulations. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. For those listening to archives using live365.com and rating the programs, please email me as to why you assign a specific rating to the show. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dave Hook back to the show to discuss the newly proposed FAA Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (UAV) rules. Please note that Dave summarized the 195 page FAA report in a document you will find posted to the blog for this show titled "Small UAV Regulations Proposal.pdf." This document is available for your download. In the first segment of our 101 minute program, Dave provided us with a short overview of the UAV environment as far as regulations were concerned, pointing out why sensible regulations were needed and wanted by the industry. Dave explained the FAA proposed rule process, the commentary period, and then the process for evaluating the comments and eventually publishing final rules. Dave went over some of the more significant proposed regulations in the 195 page document including the proposal for the operator to have an airman certificate based on a written test with a possible $150 fee. Another requirement would require the UAV operator to check the NOTAMS and to be accountable. Operators were defined as were visual observers. The class of UAV was described in the proposed rules. There may also be a potential issue about the UAV and its cargo, especially controlled substances legal in a state but illegal by the feds given the airspace is controlled under federal law. Dave had some interesting comments about this. Kris called from Wyoming and talked about Ultralight aircraft outside of controlled airspace not being regulated. Dave and Kris talked about the airspace classifications, what is regulated, what is not. They also spoke about the approximate 20,000 registered airports in the country of which roughly 15,000 are on private property and what this means regarding law enforcement. In the second segment, Dave mentioned the proposed $150 fee and the proposed rule to register the UAVs with an N number. Dr. Jurist called in to talk about potential opposition to the rules from the academic community and how the proposed rules might inhibit academic and other UAV R&D. Dave and John cited examples of how the rules might adversely impact the academic & R&D community. Near the end of our discussion, Ft. Worth John called to talk about UAVs and their possible use as a terrorist weapon. Since the purchase of the UAV was not being regulated, both John and Dave pointed out that someone with the intent to misuse a UAV would not likely care about the regulations, proposed or final. In summary, Dave said the proposed rules were a good first effort and encouraged concerned people to give the FAA comments during the 60 day comment period which starts when the rules are published in the Federal Register. If you have comments/questions please post them on TSS blog above. You can reach David Hook through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com. For those listening to archives using live365.com and rating the programs, please email me as to why you assign a specific rating to the show. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dr. Arlin Crotts back to the show to discuss his new book, "The New Moon: Water, Exploration, and Future Habitation" plus lunar related science and development issues & concerns. For more information, visit Dr. Crotts website, http://user.astro.columbia.edu/~arlin/research.html. In the first segment of our 93 minute program, I asked Dr. Crotts to summarize lunar science and development progress since his last appearance on TSS, Oct. 27, 2009 through today. Dr. Crotts had much say in this summary, especially with lunar water, hydroxyls, minerals, LCROSS, volatiles, and more. Don't miss this summary. Listeners asked many questions about INSITU Resource Utilization on the Moon, polar ice, water ice, volatiles, fuel possibilities, and more. I asked if he had detected an increase in the public's awareness of the Moon and many of these issues plus I wanted his thoughts on the private sector commercial opportunities and plans opening up for the Moon. The balance of this segment featured calls and listeners emails asking about the lunar poles, volatiles, craters & the Resolve Mission. In the second segment, Dr. Crotts was asked about the Lunar Mission One Kickstarter project and their wanting to drill 100m into the Moon. Dr. Crotts did not comment on the project but did talk about why we needed more and deeper lunar drilling exploration. Our guest also talked about his book in detail in this segment, saying it was very detailed, well documented and supported, and that readers would learn things about the Moon not previously known or written about given his access to original lunar exploration and Apollo documents. Other topics in this segment addressed humans to Mars or the moons of Mars, the timing of human lunar settlement which he supported but not until we know much more about the Moon to do it safely and correctly. We talked about this approach in some detail. Space settlement was discussed and he said it would happen sooner or later but that we needed more lunar science first before we settled the Moon. Near the end of the segment, Dr. Crotts was asked about NASA's ARM project. Space mining came up and then just before the program ended, Eric inquired about Transit Lunar Phenomena (see http://user.astro.columbia.edu/~arlin/TLP). Tim was our last caller asking about the use of RTGs. Dr. Crotts talked about reactors on the Moon and mentioned the smaller Toshiba 4G reactor. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Dr. Crotts through his website or me.

Les Johnson, Sunday, 2-15-15 (48.49MB; download) -- Guest: Les Johnson. Topics: Solar sails, advanced propulsion, HSF, science fiction books & movies, and more. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Les Johnson back to the show to discuss his latest books on popular science & science fiction, solar sails, and much more. In the first segment of our 1 hour 45 minute show, Les began talking about solar sails and their use to go to go around our solar system and eventually to the stars. There was much interest in the solar sail subject so Les gave us a terrific somewhat technical lesson on solar sails. We fielded many listener questions and we all learned much about solar sails, their potential, today's capabilities, materials used, and more. This was an exceptional discussion so don't miss it as solar sails are a very exciting technology for robotic spacecraft. In the second segment, Les mentioned the Lunar Flashlight and Scout missions. I asked our guest about the track record for solar sail missions. If the mission launch was a success, the solar sail mission has been pretty good but there have been issues with the launches on some of the past solar sail missions. I also inquired about solar sail work, research, and interest around the world and with other space agencies. A listener emailed wondering if the use of a solar sail made a satellite or a mission more vulnerable to an ASAT type weapon. We switched gears to talk about the science fiction work Les has done with Ben Bova regarding mars with his book "Rescue Mode." Les talked about his parameters when writing science fiction plus I asked him about the feedback he gets as an author from both his popular science books as compared to his sci-fi books. You might be surprised by his answer. Nuclear propulsion came up for discussion and a few listeners wanted to know the human spaceflight awareness level of people when he gives lectures on the topic. Interstellar flight was discussed as was the movie "Interstellar." As we were moving toward closing the program, Less said he believes HSF is going through a golden age and he explained why. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can email Les at the address he gave out, through his website at www.lesjohnsonauthor.com, or me.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed back Charles Miller to the program to discuss the upcoming citizen lobby effort for space policy, March Storm (see www.marchstorm.com). During the first segment of our 90 minute program, Charles introduced us to March Storm, March 15-19, 2015, training, and the Citizen Space Agenda. For this segment, Charles focused on Cheap Access to Space (CATS) & Space Settlement. He talked about plans to achieve CATS which then opens the door to settlement. He told us about a prize program for a fully reusable space vehicle citing X-37 as a model. As for fully reusable, he said we had the technology and capability to do this today but there was no way to close a business case for it. We also talked about lobbying, who the March Storm teams talk with on the Hill, staffers or the elected member. He also talked about the training and how they focus their message depending on the interests and party affiliation of the member. He provided us with examples of this. He got several listener emails including one from Perry inquiring how they address congressional objections based on tight budgets, reducing spending and such. We talked about the price being open to international partners and the need for competition. In the second segment, Matt from Austria asked about National Defense Authorization Act and the development of a US liquid fuel rocket engine plus who might bid on it. Charles provided a most interesting response to Matt. We then switched to commercial crew and cargo and the need for a smooth transition to commercial space stations. Their agenda includes a "no-gap" policy for such a transition. He also said we need a station backup plan in case Russia does pull out of the ISS around 2020 and suggested using a command module docked to the American side of the station to offer controls similar to what the Russians do today. We did talk about the ISS and commercial space. Charles said the ISS is currently an incubator for developing and exploiting markets. Questions came in about lobbying new members of congress and inexperienced staff. Charles reported that up 40% of the congressional staff are new each year or after each election so talking to "newbies" is not out of the ordinary. Near the end, Tony asked about the wide diversity of interests and preferred missions across the advocacy community. In his closing comments, Charles said CATS would make available truly low cost global broadband plus one could take the top 50 world leaders to space to experience Earth without borders, boundaries and fences to see us all as one. Please post your comments/Questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Charles Miller through me @ drspace@thespaceshow.com. Selected by: David Livingston [ stations ], Sat, 14 Feb 2015 18:07:50 UTC

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. Welcome to our Audition and Co-host program. During the first segment of our nearly 2 hour program, we did not get any audition calls from people contacting me to put themselves on The Space Show as a guest. Toward the end of the program I took a call from Andrew regarding his being a co-host and one from Tim with an excellent suggestion for how to be on the program. More about those calls when we get to the second segment. For the first segment, Marshall called and talked about three sci-fi books he is writing plus I asked about his daughter who won a Space Show contest years ago and she got a tour of Loral and their satellite mfg. business. Pooley called and talked about SpaceX, then he talked about the next several books being planned in the Microlaunchers series. In the second segment, John in Ft. Worth called to talk about seeing the video on rocket reusability with Tori Bruno at Stanford. Mr. Bruno is the ULA CEO. The better link to use when seeing this hour long video is http://youtu.be/iVFz67WCPIw. John and I strongly recommend it. Doug began emailing questions to John about depots and his previous calculations regarding the Falcon Heavy. John admitted to an error in his previous analysis which he discussed that with Doug who was communicating via email. Our next caller was Tim in Huntsville who suggested blogtalker.com for people who contact me wanting to be on the show. Clearly such people do not follow my suggestion which is to call an Open Lines show or call when I do the auditions show but with blogtalker.com, they can actually make a short demo talk on their subject or topic for TSS and send me the URL. Based on how well they do, the interest in the topic plus other factors, that would help me decide if a self-invited guest should be on the show. Andrew was our last caller and he talked about himself being a co-host for topics dealing with astronomy, telescopes, engineering, machine tools, and more. Doug communicated with Andrew by email to discuss the role of machining in the setting of an initial base (Moon or Mars) when in situ metals are accessed. What all could be made? I am working on this show with Andrew. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach any of the callers through or those sending emails through me.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Paul Szymanski to the show to discuss military space, space warfare, cyber issues and more. In the first segment of our 1 hour 58 minute discussion, Paul introduced us to the topic and told us how he got his interest in the field. We also talked about military space matters in history and how they impact what is happening in space development today, including commercial space. He talked about the attitude he saw with the Air Force as well as other parts of the government and mentioned that some of our military space data and information goes over commercial satellites and systems. He explained why this made such systems legitimate military targets and he talked about the risks associated with carrying military data. He went over historical incidents regarding satellite kills, disruptions, & tests. He also spoke to U.S. laser weapon work, our ASAT weapons including the F15 efforts, the role of DARPA, and more. Paul took many listener emails. They ranged from weapons and war plans for the Moon and Mars to army programs for troops in space or using space to get to a battlefield destination. He also spoke to the issue of space to Earth weapons,. BJohn inquired about Iran and Paul took several questions about U.S. readiness. On this subject, our guest had much to say. He spoke about other countries including China and Russia, but did address the situation in the Ukraine and at one point in our discussion, suggested there had already been a space war regarding the Ukraine. In the second segment, Paul fielded additional questions on space junk and this time he talked about hiding weapons in space junk that were really ASAT weapons. A listener wanted to know about the cislunar trade routes and while Paul said that was off in the future, the more current focus would be GEO and LEO. At one point the GEO-Moon area was referred to as a possible battle ground. Another listener wanted to know about choke points. He referred us to papers on his website, http://spacecontrol.info. He said GEO was a chokepoint and so were the GPS satellites. A listener wanted to know about a possible larger role for the Army and Paul agreed that the Army should have a larger role in space warfare issues. Don't miss his explanation. In response to a question by Gabriel, he talked about the 1970s and CSAT, booster failures in the 80s, and the current Ukraine-Crimea crisis. While some of the reports he mentioned were regarded as rumors, he did do some dot connecting with regards to the Ukraine and the Russian Glonass GPS disruption plus Proton launch failures. He explained how he connected the dots. Tell us what you think on the blog. Cyberwarfare was discussed as was the effectiveness of a missile defense system. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. Welcome to our Open Lines discussion. In the first segment of this 2 hour 2 minute program, I put forth some suggested topics and once again, I explained phone line issues for listeners regarding land lines, VoIP, compression, cordless phones, cell phones, digital phones, and even fiber lines. Phone line issues remain the number one problem faced by The Space Show in delivering quality audio so once again I went over the requirements and the restraints based on our equipment and broadcasting equipment in general. Several listeners did comment on the phone line issues via email. John from Florida was the first caller and he talked about Ernst Stuhlinger and his work plus he requested Dr. Jeff Hoffman of MIT return as a guest to the show. During our conversation, I mentioned ULA CEO Tory Bruno recent & his lecture at Stanford on the pros and cons of rocket reusability (www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DMb2yHh5CA). Marshall was the next caller who talked about cell phones and the DSP computer in the phone. He also talked about SOHO and replacing old satellites with new ones. We talked about the cost of doing that and Marshall said he would gladly pay 5% more in taxes if he was guaranteed the money would be used for satellite replacement. I asked other callers if they would do that but nobody bothered to respond. Marshall said we needed a satellite replacement program so jokingly, I suggested a Cash For Old Clunker Satellites modeled after the Cash for Clunkers car program several years ago. Michael Listner called to talk about recent news articles suggesting the FAA was going to regulate lunar business. He clarified this for us. Emmet sent us a note suggesting Doug had a video on the net which had gone viral thus making Doug an internet star (www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rzy63276GEg). In the second segment, Doug called the show & explained the video as a product of www.moonandback.com. Doug talked about the planned SpaceX launch later in the day, the recovery of the first stage and the Falcon Heavy as part of his overall heavy lift discussion. He also raised some questions about the Dawn Mission and its potential findings regarding Ceres. Turbo pumps came up as did other issues with liquid rocket motors such as which fuel to use given my promoting the late April webinar addressing these and other rocket issues.
