We welcomed back Chris Carberry to this special one hour program to discuss the recently concluded Explore Mars Workshop, "Affording Mars" that was held in early December 2013. Chris explained the purpose of the workshop and we talked about the conclusions and the plans to move forward and build upon the success of this program. To learn more about this workshop, visit www.exploremars.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Affording-Human-Exploration-of-Mars-1-12-14-final.pdf. Listeners asked questions about defining affordability, advanced propulsion for Mars, the use of SLS, and if Inspiration Mars and Mars One contributed to their efforts. You might be surprised by his answer to this last question. At the midway point, we switched to other programs in play for Explore Mars, Inc. Visit their website for information on the programs we discussed plus other information on this organization, www.exploremars.org. In particular we talked about the upcoming legislative blitz in Washington, DC plus the April main conference, Humans 2 Mars Summit 2014. While the conference will be in Washington, DC, it will be live streamed and we can all watch it wherever we are around the world. One of my questions to Chris was how in a very short time, four years, he has built and made Explore Mars one of the most credible advocacy organizations and policy influencing organizations. I also commented on the quality of their programming, attendees, speakers, all of it. Chris did provide an explanation for this which I think all of us could benefit from. Listen to how he said they communicate and work with others, even those opposed to Mars. As I said, we could all learn from the Explore Mars playbook. We also talked about robotic, science and human missions and how all are needed working together. Chris also talked plausible timelines for HSF to Mars. Post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Chris though the Explore Mars website. Selected by: David Livingston [ stations ], Wed, 05 Feb 2014 17:29:09 UTC

We welcomed Jim Crisafulli back to the show for this 90 minute discussion of space development, exploration, and education in the State of Hawaii. As the same discussion topics were part of the entire program, I am summarizing this show is if there was one segment despite our having taken a break for segment two about halfway through the program. Our discussion started with my asking our guest about the space industry in Hawaii and to identify some of the unique advantages Hawaii offers space businesses, programs, organizations, and academia. Mr. Crisafulli talked at length about the strategic advantages for enhancing space exploration and all aspects of space development, including NewSpace programs and the expansion of commercial space. Mr. Crisafulli talked about R&D, education outreach including K-12 education. We also discussed in some detail specific programs such as the Real World Design Challenge to inspire future scientists, engineers, educators & entrepreneurs for the developing & rapidly evolving aerospace community. Rob Kelso called in as we started discussing the PISCES Program (Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems) as Rob is the Executive Director. Most of the balance of the first segment Rob updated us on PISCES programs given he was last a guest on TSS on June 21, 2013. We also highlighted the history of PISCES which got its start in 2007. As PISCES and other Hawaiian space projects and programs take place on all the islands, we got a good overview of all that Hawaii offers in all aspects of space development and exploration. After the break, while still discussing PISCES and educational projects, we talked about the Hawaii Spaceflight Lab located on the Manoa Campus of UH (www.hsfl.hawaii.edu/wordpress/about) and the proposed spaceport for space tourism for horizontal takeoff & landings. Hawaii analog sites for lunar and Martian missions were talked about as were Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), a Tri-state Agreement with Alaska & Oregon, laser communication development and much more. As our discussion was ending, we talked about the upcoming space conference to be held in Hawaii in October of this year. More info about the conference as it becomes known. Please post comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can email Jim or Rob of PISCES by going through me or their organization websites. Open Lines, Sunday, 2-2-14 (110.87MB; download) -- Guest: Open Lines with Dr. David Livingston. Topics: Artificial & natural gravity, Leonardo DiCaprio, HSF to Mars. Please direct all comments & questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments & questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. Welcome to this two hour one minute Open Lines discussion on what turned out to be mostly about artificial gravity. While there were actually two breaks in this program, since the topic was the same throughout the full show, I am archiving this as a single segment summary. We started the program by my making announcements, then reading parts of an article that recently appeared in the Turlock Journal (www.turlockjournal.com/section/26/article/23874) that talked about the green efforts by actor Leonardo DiCaprio but also pointing out his having arranged to be an early passenger onboard SpaceShip2. The author of the article, Dennis Wyatt, then pointed out the hypocracy of Mr. DiCaprio by examining the carbon footprint of SpaceShip2 & comparing it to cars & other things, pointing out the enormous consumption and carbon footprint that will be unloaded on Earth by Mr. DiCaprio's flight. I read parts of the article to point out the hypocracy among those that preach to us to do as they say yet they seldom if ever walk their own talk. I also mentioned articles in the informative menu of The Black Bear Diner Gazette from their Emeryville, CA menu, one of which was an old news article saying that NASA Administrator Thomas Paine predicted & had a goal of doing a HSF mission to Mars by 1981-82. Some of the callers for today's discussion did offer comments on both the DiCaprio article as well as wondering if we could have gone to and from Mars with astronauts back in 1981-82. However, by far, the topic of the day was artificial gravity, a topic which really surprised me. The callers and those sending emails wanted to talk about artificial gravity, their understanding of it, how to achieve it, their analysis of it, and more. The callers talked 2 RMs, 3 RPMs, 4 RPMs, we talked about some of the comments by the life scientists on this subject on previous shows, much of which was discarded by the callers who had a focus on engineering and physics and their own perspectives. We also talked about the difference between partial gravity & full 1 g artificial gravity. I mentioned that many were unsure that 1 g of artificial gravity would be the same as 1 g here on Earth but that was quickly discarded by all callers and those sending in emails. Our callers also talked about experiments that should take place using free flyers adjacent to the ISS to study some of the artificial gravity questions in preparation for long duration human spaceflight. Because of the unexpected interest in artificial gravity, I have decided to arrange for updated programming on the subject with "experts" representing aerospace medicine, life scientists, engineers that would be designing space based centrifuges, and more. I will be announcing these programs as they are scheduled & they will appear in the weekly newsletters. Please post your comments/questions for this show on TSS blog above. You can reach any of the callers to this program by sending your email through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com. Selected by: David Livingston [ stations ], Mon, 03 Feb 2014 16:43:08 UTC

Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Dr. Dava Newman to the program to discuss her positive pressure BioSuit spacesuit project at MIT. During our 1 hour 1 minute single segment program, Dr. Newman took us through a brief history of positive pressure spacesuits up to and including her BioSuit version 4 project. For more information, please visit these and other websites: http://web.mit.edu/aeroastro/www/people/dnewman/bio.html; www.bostonmagazine.com/news/blog/2013/12/10/mit-biosuit-system-dava-newman; http://mvl.mit.edu/EVA/biosuit and http://esd.mit.edu/Faculty_Pages/newman/newman.htm. We covered many topics, fielded numerous listener email questions, and learned much about the BioSuit as well as traditional spacesuits. The history started with Dr. Paul Webb and his efforts from the early 70's (Dr. Webb was a guest on TSS on Sep.t. 17, 2006), then we talked about the progress in materials, designs, and engineering leading up to the BioSuit. Dr. Newman explained how flexibility and movement were possible in the BioSuit, how this reduced the amount of energy expended by the astronaut, and even reduced some of the thermal needs. We also talked about repairs of the suit, then we spent much time talking about the life support and EVA pack plus the helmet. As we learned, joints and concave parts of the body like the back of the knee do present problems but they believe they have solutions to these challenges by using special materials to fill in the void spaces. At one point, Professor Newman was asked about needing different suits for orbit, the Moon, and Mars. As we learned, the basic suit is the same for everything but depending on the mission, different life support and EVA packs would be available. Then we talked about a suit for inside the vehicle or the ISS, the Variable Vector Suit. Questions came in about how the suit works, closes up, and suit economics compared to the costs of traditional spacesuits and EVA suits. Questions about radiation protection, lunar dust protection and more was asked, plus we talked about the possibility of using the basic BioSuit for space tourism flights providing the tourist is not outside the spaceship. During our discussion, Professor Newman went over many of the pressure issues and requirements plus other technical issues for this suit. We also learned that it could be made operational within 2-3 years of full up funding. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. We welcomed back Rick Boozer to continue discussing his premise that congressional mismanagement as adversely impacted NASA and that money going to SLS is money better spent elsewhere. During the first segment of this 1 hour 45 minute program, Mr. Boozer reintroduced his book to us (he was a guest on TSS regarding his book on August 12, 2013), talking to us about adverse congressional management of NASA the why he believe SLS is damaging to NASA. Mr. Boozer is very effective in sating his case, with lots of passion. He references earlier proposals by ULA and SpaceX to build larger heavy lift rockets than the full size SLS for a fraction of the SLS cost but those proposals were dismissed, paving the way for SLS. We also talked about private sector efforts in making rockets rather than the government doing it, also COTS and Commercial Crew. At times I countered Rick's perspective with a few of the better known pro-SLS arguments such as SLS is a place holder for key parts of the aerospace workforce. Don't miss what Rick had to say about this idea. In the second segment, Doug called in with SLS questions based on the assumption that SLS does fly. Our guest talked about a heavy lifter not needed for the Moon but most likely needed for human spaceflight to Mars. Another listener asked Rick if he had a Plan B if SLS continued to be funded. Rick said the Plan B is today's status quo. During both segments of this program, our guest mentioned SLS & competing private heavy lift vehicle studies carried out by Dr. Alan Wilhite of Georgia Tech. Rick provided me with several URLs to this information. Check out this information at www.newspacewatch.com/docs/IAC-12.D3.2.3.x15379-NASAStudy.pdf & http://spirit.as.utexas.edu/~fiso/telecon/Wilhite_2-13-13/Wilhite_2-13-13.pdf. Also, Rick suggested a debate on the SLS topic. I would be willing to do a Space Show debate with Rick opposing SLS. If you have a suggestion for someone to represent support for SLS, please let know. Toward the end of the program, we asked Rick about his future book plans and he talked about a crowd funding program regarding the preservation of valuable astronomical data. Also, visit Rick's own blog, http://astromaven.blogspot.com. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. Contact Rick through his blog or through me. If you buy his book and I strongly suggest you do so, please go through the OGLF/The Space Show Amazon portal as described at www.thespaceshow.com, www.onegiantleapfoundation.org and all archive summaries on the website and blog, Amazon will donate a percentage of your purchase to The Space Show. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Dr. Spudis back to the show for this 1 hour 54 minute wide ranging discussion on space policy, lunar activities, the Chinese space program, SLS, weapons in space, military space, and more. In our first segment, Dr. Spudis started with a report on the Chinese lunar lander/rover and said that he was hearing there were problems with it. Since the Chinese program is not transparent, he said it was hard to get details but even if the mission ended early, it met its goals of a soft landing on the Moon. He had more to say about the lander, the accomplishments of the Chinese program and some of the real progress by the Chinese, especially from their next to last mission. Dr. Spudis fielded many email questions and took calls. Our guest then started talking about the Clementine mission given its been 20 years since this very successful program. You can read his articles about Clementine on his website (spudislunarresources.com and also his blog, http://blogs.airspacemag.com/moon. He also talked about LCROSS and other recent missions. Just before the end of the first segment, Marshall phoned in to talk about taxing lunar entrepreneurial ventures. We also talked benefit sharing, global taxation, and commercial incentives. We closed the segment with Paul talking about the economic and wealth creating potential afforded us all by cislunar development. In the second segment, he responded to an email question about the Earth-Mars space system having a higher commercial value than cislunar. Paul explained in some detail why that was not so & why cislunar is far greater in economic value and wealth potential. Paul then talked about Hugh Dryden & his accomplishments, then renaming the Dryden NASA facility after Neil Armstrong. Our next subject was American Exceptionalism with Paul blogged about last year. We then talked about space tourism. Paul said he was skeptical about it but we just wait and see. I mentioned a new book about Sir Richard Branson & problems with Virgin Galactic by British author Tom Bower. Here is an article that describes what we talked about: www.newspacejournal.com/2014/01/26/new-branson-bio-examines-delays-and-other-problems-with-virgin-galactic. Paul got a question from Phil to describe lunar ice, then SLS John called to agree with Paul's SLS analysis and more. Rick was our final emailer asking about the ASRG cancellation and what this means for deep space & long duration missions. Paul's concluding comments again supported the wealth & economic potential for cislunar development. Please post comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can contact Dr. Spudis through his website. During the first segment of our 1 hour 27 minute discussion, Professor Seager started with a working definition for exoplanets and the techniques used to find exoplanets. We also talked about planet habitability, the habitable zone, Kepler planets, ground based telescopes, direct imaging, the Gemini Planet Imager, and the potential involvement of amateurs & their telescopes in the search for exoplanets. Many listener questions came in by email. One focused on SETI which led to an interesting discussion with our guest. Professor Seager provided us with comparison statistics for various planets and their size and characteristics, and we talked more about the best exoplanet finding methods. Our guest told us about "ExoplanetSat," a 3U CubeSat capable of high precision pointing with a goal of detecting small transiting exoplanets orbiting bright, sun-like stars. We then discussed CubeSat photography & cameras and more about the need for precision pointing. Professor Seager received several questions about budget and NASA issues, then Doug called in with excellent questions about exoplanets that you do not want to miss. In the second segment, we talked about Professor Seager's ebook on her website, "Is There Life Out There," plus our guest responded to an email question from Nathan about the "Rare Earth" hypothesis. We then talked about the KST problems and the new mission for the space telescope referred to as K2. John form Ft. Worth called to ask about conceptual and technological advancement & breakthroughs in the field. I asked our guest what she thought the field might look like in ten years plus I asked her why rocky planets were important for finding exoplanets. Charles Pooley called to ask about photometry, LEO, & related issues. As our program was ending, I asked Professor Seager to share with us some of her media experience and thoughts about the quality of science reporting. Please post comments/questions on TSS blog. I will be happy to pass on your emails to her if you send them to me. Selected by: David Livingston [ stations ], Sat, 25 Jan 2014 17:34:20 UTC

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Dr. Elvis & I discussed the work done by Dr. Elvis in mathematically figuring out the potential number of commercially viable asteroids. During the segment, he explains how he created his formula, he went through key assumptions with us, we talked about Delta V needed to reach the asteroids, the Delta V for the return trip with ore on board, and showing how this determines the minimum size for an asteroid of commercial value. He also said his analysis is probably on the conservative side and with more data, he can refine his analysis. I am listing the URLs and articles that have reported on his work as he publication gave his work a different slant: BBC: The headline gives the wrong impression, though the article is fair enough (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-25716103). Dr Elvis told BBC News: "I want to stress that my paper does not mean that there is no commercial future for asteroid mining. It does mean that gold mines are rare, which shouldn't be too surprising. Not every mountain on Earth hides a fortune, and not every flying mountain in space will either." New Scientist had it first:
www.newscientist.com/article/dn24696-alienhunting-equation-revamped-for-mining-asteroids.html#.Utf6F3kTs2Q. Wired.co.uk:
www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2014-01/14/asteroid-mining-not-viable where they correctly say "Elvis does, however, continually point out in his research paper that the estimates are conservative, and that far more work needs to be done to improve upon these predictions. In fact, the paper is more of a call to action that a warning from a naysayer." Newser: www.newser.com/story/180656/there-are-only-10-asteroids-worth-mining.html; Mining.com also has a good summary:
www.mining.com/is-space-mining-commercially-viable-22553; They are all picking up off Slashdot (http://beta.slashdot.org/story/196587). 100s of comments, not all really to the point.
