This will help me bring better programming to the audience. Welcome to this 2 hour 11 minute Open Lines Show. As we started our first segment, I made several announcements including the return to action for the Space Cynics blog. This time we will be accepting guest editorials. Watch for the guidelines/rules for guest editors and those submitting comments to the blog. Once you see the guidelines/rules on the top blog menu bar, Space Cynics will be officially back. See http://spacecynic.wordpress.com. I also talked about a recent NPR interview with the inventor of the Super Soaker water gun who just happens to be a top guy at JPL! I'll make an effort to invite this person to the show. Our first caller was from Scott who wanted to talk about and promote his Droid platform app for orbital speed calculations. If you are interested in downloading this app to your Droid device, search in Google Play for "Orbital Speed." Scott described his app and how it worked and since there was some history re the app and the Charles Pooley Microlaunchers book, that came up during the discussion. This was probably the dominant topic in the first segment. Pooley did call in regarding the app and the references to his book, but Charles, in addition to promoting Microlaunchers as he usually does, also spoke about himself as the SPACE Heretic. You can read about this at the tiny URL goo.gl/vo7Ux7 (cut & paste to your browser or use the full URL www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20140620023828-9942227-charles-pooley-heratic?_mSplash=1). During this segment, we also talked briefly about hybrid rocket motors and specifically about escape velocity. I read an email from B John in Sweden suggesting that going to the Moon or Mars was and is counterproductive for our HSF program. I asked for listener comment but unfortunately this topic was not picked up by the listeners. Perhaps some of you listening on archives will post a blog comment about B John's ideas. In the second segment, John Hunt called in to talk some more about escape velocity and the formulas for it. He then asked a series of question about science and STEM education. I shared what I knew about the topic but we were hoping for teachers or others involved in this field to call in with more information. Perhaps those of you working in these fields can post some detailed comments in response to John's questions on the blog. We had several emails about American public participation for a better HSF policy and for influencing policy makers and Congress for space policy. The email questions seemed to think some level of American public participation was needed but that the pressure in numbers was not there compared to non-space issues receiving funding. To read the rest of this summary, visit www.thespaceshow.com or http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Thank you.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Professor Henry Lambright of Syracuse University to the show to discuss his excellent book "Why Mars: NASA and the Politics of Space Exploration." During the first segment of this 1 hour 33 minute program, Dr. Lambright introduced us to his book and what prompted him to write it. Dr. Lambright then described three main motivating factors for having our Mars program starting with before NASA with the belief and cultural components suggesting some sort of life on Mars. Next as a motivating factor dating back from the Von Braun time frame of humans going to Mars. His third motivating factor had to do with political issues and competition. Since we were talking about the possibilities of life on Mars, I asked our guest about Viking and the more recent pronouncements by Dr. Gil Levin who has been on TSS several times over the past few years. Later, Dr. Lambright had many good things to say about our science and robotic program but said our human spaceflight program was in disarray. Dr. Lambright got several listener emails & phone calls. He was asked for the WHY behind human spaceflight and that led to a discussion about Big Science. I asked him to define Big Science which he did. We talked about the NRC Pathways HSF study, then our guest talked about triggers leading to big events and progress, plus the more typical method of moving forward which he called slow evolution. Jumping forward to our second segment, we talked about the Clinton years in the 90s for policy, Mars Observer & how that loss was turned into a plus for our Mars policy. Other topics included astronaut risk taking, the void in leadership for space, Mars, and things in general. Doug called to consolidate all the motivating factors and issues to just one, the need for more money. He made a good case for this consolidation. We also talked about the challenges for getting alternative theories seriously considered by NASA, Congress, and policy makers. The NASA to NACA suggestion came up, we talked about the privates taking over LEO with NASA focusing on BLEO & advanced technologies. As the program was ending, I asked our guest about the Syracuse student interest in space and Mars, plus our guest left us with an important closing comment. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. If you want to reach Dr. Lambright, you can do so through me. Finally, if you buy his book from Amazon, do so through the OGLF Amazon portal so that Amazon will contribute to The Space Show. Instructions are in each archive write up and on the blog, plus both The Space Show and OGLF websites.

Topics: Office of Commercial Space Transportation (COMSTAC) Advisory Committee & Bigelow Aerospace updates. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. For those listening to archives using live365.com and rating the programs, please email me as to why you assign a specific rating to the show. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed back Mike Gold, particularly in his new position as the Chair of the Office of Commercial Space Transportation (COMSTAC) Advisory Committee, as well as for Bigelow Aerospace updates in the second half of our program. During the first segment of our one hour discussion, Mr. Gold talked about the Office of Commercial Space Transportation, the COMSTAC which is the Advisory Committee of which he is the new Chair. He also explained the relationship of the COMSTAC with the FAA AST and let us know that their meetings are open to the public. Announcements, archived videos and other important COMSTAC information can be found on their website at http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ast/advisory_committee. ITAR reform was also a big part of our discussion. In the second segment, Mr. Gold provided us with Bigelow Aerospace updates. We started with Tony's email about the Landis Land orbit in the Venusian Atmosphere in which in which he inquired if Bigelow or anyone had any plans to put a habitat in that orbit. Mile's response seemed to leave some openings there for a future down the road. We talked more about ITAR, a subject that was discussed in both segments. Mr. Gold talked about the upcoming ISS Bigelow Expandable Activity Module (BEAM), which is scheduled to arrive at the space station in 2015 for a two-year technology demonstration (www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/station/news/beam_feature.html). Mike mentioned that an astronaut would actually board the module. We talked about government regulations, going BLEO and space property rights. In fact, Mike suggested that the absence space property rights or legal processes for investment by private space companies is at least a partial explanation for why we have done so little in space development over the past several decades. In the context of space based property right, we discussed the Outer Space Treaty (OST), benefit sharing issues, and the Moon Treaty. Mike talked about an important first step in property right which would be to make sure that companies who operate and engage in space development can do so in an exclusive non-interference zone. Near the end of the discussion we talked about the frustration in waiting for progress to be made, the earlier Bigelow successes including Genesis 1 & 2 and the BA 330 full service/size habitat. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Mike Gold through COMSTAC or me.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed back Dr. Doug Plata for this two hour two minute discussion. NOTE THAT THREE SUPPLEMENTAL DOCUMENTS FROM DOUG WILL BE UPLOADED TO THE BLOG. During the first segment, Doug introduced us to the topics he discussed at the recent ISDC conference in Los Angeles. He talked about SpaceX and both the Falcon 9 & Heavy, Lunar ice, hollow ice, a concept he calls Moon for Mars, and more. He also suggested that the Moon was not necessary for a Mars mission. Additionally, while he certainly support a return to the Moon, he does not believe bringing back the VSE and Constellation is the way to do it. I asked him how he got is interest in and start in space advocacy about 4 years ago. Doug told us an interesting story, including how he was influenced by the LCROSS mission. Michael Listner called to ask Doug about the WHY for the missions & projects he was advocating. This was an interesting discussion though Michael got cut off due to a glitch at his end. Tony wanted to know if Doug might be considering a start-up around his ideas in the near future. Other first segment topics included ISRU, what makes space sustainable, and gaining the public interest and trust. I asked him what among his ISDC topics was the least popular. Listen for the answer. In the second segment, Doug said people could find the lunar cots petition at www.lunarcots.com. Doug addressed a question submitted by Tony regarding the use of water for radiation shielding. Doug corrected some misunderstandings from his previous comment & went through the calculations in support of his conclusions. We talked about a recent Mars One announcement for payloads for their planned 2018 mission. Doug talked lunar cots, telerobotics, & benefits which he had sent me on an earlier show. It is the three benefits documents that I will upload to the blog. Doug had more to say on LCROSS & its impact on him. He also told us about his newly made NASA HQ and commercial space contacts regarding lunar cots and cislunar. As the program was ending, he talked about doing a special Flagstaff conference next year with a media event at nearby Meteor Crater. Several times during our discussion, Doug cited Hops Blog for lunar and Mars lander/hopper ideas. See http://hopsblog-hop.blogspot.com. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Doug through me or his lunar cots page.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed John Oehler back to the program to discuss his new book,"Papyrus: A Thriller," and some of the 1983 space technologies that contributed to the story. During the first segment of this 90 minute discussion, Mr. Oehler responded to a few of my general questions regarding ground penetrating radar (GPR), book contests, and self-publishing. Our guest then told us the story of writing this book, a project which was start and stop over many years. He also explained why the 1983 setting. We talked about Queen Tiye who was the mother of King Tutankhamen, the sun god focus, and how the Eritrean war of independence factored in to the story. Without giving too much away, very early on we saw the use of modern technology and space based technology contributing to the story as a secret message was accidentally discovered to be under a papyrus written by Queen Tiye in the Cairo Museum. John developed a very exciting way of getting the papyrus out of the museum to be scanned by high technology and from there the story goes back and forth from 1983 to the days of the 19th Dynasty and the focus on the sun god. Our guest told us enough of the story to get us excited to read the entire book and having read it, I can tell you it’s a "you can't put me down" type book to read. One of the questions I asked our guest was could the story have been told or even worked had there been no space technology, specifically remote sensing. John did not think it would have been written without that contribution. In the second segment, we talked more about the sun god religion and what happened after the 30 year duration of the focus on the sun god. I asked John about his next book, "Tepui," which takes place in Venezuela. Marshall called in to ask about the need for an author to actually have been to the ISS, the Moon, or Mars to write a good story just as John Oehler has been to the locations he writes about in his books. We spent a good amount of time discussing this subject from the artist and craft perspective. We even talked about the Mars Microphone idea and why that would be important for writing good stories about Mars. More was said about both GPR and LIDAR and how they could be used to write a story based on Martian analysis and findings using these tools on Mars. For more information about this book and all of John Oehler's books, visit his website at http://johnoehler.com. Remember to use the OGLF Amazon portal if you purchase this book through Amazon. Please post all comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach our guest through his website or me.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Greg Cecil back to the program for this 1 hour 37 minute discussion. During our first segment, Greg summarized his space shuttle experience when working on the thermal protection system at KSC, talked about keeping in touch with former shuttle employees and letting us know that in his opinion, shuttle was retired too early. After the shuttle program was closed down, Greg began consulting and teaching science to middle school students. He talked about the difference in a public inner city school as compared to teaching in a private school. His observations are important, especially about parent involvement & support in the student's education. Greg devised space related projects for the students & created scientific experiments to fly with the J.P. Aerospace high altitude balloon flights. Greg described some of the experiments and the benefits in working with John Powell of J.P. Aerospace. We talked about the impact of the flights and making the payloads. I asked if the impact will remain with them as they go through school, possibly in selecting a space or science education and career. Greg also attended the recent Explore Mars Humans2Mars Conference and here he offered us many valuable observations. Listen to what he had to say about NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden's talk, then later the talk given by NewSpace advocate and co-founder of the Space Frontier Foundation, Rick Tumlinson. The differences between the two talks and approaches led to Greg's conversion to being a NewSpace proponent. Greg talked about SpaceX and suggested it was risky for any one company to be the face of NewSpace, either intentionally or by chance. In the second segment, Greg talked about the movie, "I want To Be An Astronaut." Doug emailed in a comment based on our first segment discussion given Greg's comment about NASA budgets being tight & being a show stopper for grandiose HSF missions such as those to Mars & as reported in the NRC Pathways HSF study. Greg responded to Doug, then I let got with one of my infamous rants directed not just at Doug but we space enthusiasts in general for having lousy communication skills. In this instance, my rant was about Doug focusing on technology and never ever making the case for the WHY or the need to do what he suggested in his question. Greg then spoke to the importance of knowing your customer, congressman, market, and effectively communicating the WHY & the NEED. Later, after the rant and aftermath of the volcanic eruption, Greg spoke to how best to approach members of congress and state legislatures. During the first segment, Bob focused on the Russians gearing up to leave Baikonur, putting more and more of their space industry back under government control, plus their upcoming first test flight and launch of the Angara rocket which has been in development for 20 years or so. We addressed issues from the Russian perspective and the US perspective, talked about the ISS beyond 2020, and the fact that Russia has again said they are not interested in doing space tourism to the Moon, disavowing plans to send two tourists around the Moon despite the rumors that keep appearing. We then talked about the Falcon 9 delays and issues. Bob also explained what was behind the Orbital delay for the next Cygnus/Antares launch which will now take place in July. Evidently there are issues with the Russian rocket motor used by this launcher. The idea that the US will build a new domestic version of the Russian RD-180 engine was discussed with more questions being asked than answered. SpaceX getting USAF certification was also talked about in this segment. In our second segment, we talked about the Chinese lunar rover, Yutu, which is still alive. Bob had much to say in this update. The issue over the NASA and NOAA climate change ground data was discussed in light of the recent news stories suggesting the data was corrupted. Bob explained the use of raw data, why it is being said that the data was corrupted or possibly manipulated. He provided the website sources for this information as did caller Tim. We also talked about the latest radar images coming from Titan which seem to show an island that appears and then disappears in a methane lake. We got a question from Tony about rockets in Australia and Trent answered the questions for us via chat. Trent said the engineers and others get training in Australia, then leave the country. Trent also shared news with us about the recent Falcon 9 launch delays and reported that Arianespace said it would price compete with Falcon 9 launches. Noted space journalist Peter B. de Selding tweeted this from the Arianespace CEO: "Arianespace CEO: Our decision to cut prices to match SpaceX has resulted in handful of contracts already, to be announced in coming weeks." During the first segment of our 1 hour 36 minute program, Dr. Spudis first walked us through the NRC nearly 300 page study, hitting the highlights, raising questions, talking about what was good in the report and disappointing in it. We talked about the rational for human spaceflight, for Mars, also the Moon. We noted the absence of economic development in the report and this gave Dr. Spudis several openings to talk about his ideas for cislunar economic development. Listeners asked lots of email questions ranging from budget issues, to SpaceX and rocket reusability. Paul described much of what the study suggested as a form of "Apollo to Mars." Near the end of this segment we talked about public/private partnerships and learned that the Pathways study was only addressing public programs. A listener asked Dr. Spudis what he thought the impact of the study might be and sitting on a shelf somewhere seemed a plausible answer. In the second segment, Dr. Spudis focused on the response to the report and ways to actually develop a quality space program. He talked about the need for a space transportation system, space infrastructure, and to use an incremental approach. Robotics were discussed, we talked about the space media, and Dr. Spudis reminded us a few times that if there is no infrastructure, there can be no institutional use and capability. We also compared the Apollo period and JFK's goal for the Moon compared to now. Its an interesting discussion, especially since we no longer have many of the skill sets we had back then. The value of the Moon and commercial space came up & we talked about promoting the value to policy makers. In supporting his incremental approach, Paul referenced a bit of US naval history.
