Please remember to buy this book through the OGLF/The Space Show Amazon portal so Amazon will contribute to The Space Show. Our Amazon instructions are in every archive summary and on each Space Show blog entry. During the first segment of our 90 minute discussion, Dr. Moltz told us why he wrote the book which was to address orbital crowding, possible conflict in space and to bring these issues and others to the attention of the general public as space impacts everyone everyday. A major topic for our discussion was space debris. Using this field as an example, Dr. Moltz made a very strong case for rules of the road, space traffic control issues, and responsible behavior by both governments and the private sector. We talked about entrepreneurs and private groups resisting a more regulated environment and he made the case for the need for cooperation to avoid conflicts. Early in his book, he outlined three significant points of view regarding the debate over space policy, ranging from conflict & the military use of space was inevitable so prepare for it to avoiding problems by piecemeal global engagement to increasing the use of international space projects through international governance. Dr. Moltz received many email questions challenging a regulated environment and the need for more controls on space businesses and operations. We talked about the cubesat technology and growth of the industry, the lack of registration, & as the industry grows, possible crowding problems. We also discussed the U.N. treaties that seem to cover what we were talking about so why the need for more agreements & regulations? In our second segment, we continued our human spaceflight discussion from the end of the first segment, plus we looked at space in other countries. We mostly focused on China, India, Iran, and North Korea among others. We talked about large scale industries that may develop over time such as SSP. GPS was an example, then a listener asked about cyberwarfare & the impact on space policy. Toward the end of the program, I asked about space interest among students at the Naval Postgraduate School. Students are very interested space and the subjects discussed in Clay's book and on today's show. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Dr. Moltz through me.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Bob Zimmerman back to the program for a discussion on a variety of space new and policy topics. During our first segment of our 2 hour 5 minute show, we talked about the U.S. sanctions against Russia for their behavior in the Crimea/Ukrainian region and the instructions to NASA to halt all activity with Russia on space issues other than what is related to the ISS. As Bob pointed out about 98% of space activity with Russia is ISS oriented so Bob said the sanctions did not amount to much. He then talked policy, the idea that Russia wants its own space station and breaking the ISS agreement. He said nations break agreements like this all the time and cited our pulling of the EXOMARS agreements with Europe as an example. He then told us about the PLATO multi optical telescope being built in Europe for looking at exoplanets. Next, listeners wanted to talk with him about the upcoming Falcon 9 launch and reusability. Bob had much to say on the launch, the delay, and first stage reusability. Philip emailed in from New Brunswick about the Russians largely sticking to themselves on station. Bob spoke to cultural difference with the Russians, language issues, and said that they tended to their own experiments as we do our experiments. He also said the Russians need to keep the ISS going and need us to stay with it. Virgin Galactic was discussed and Bob went over some the test, engine, and personnel changes in recent times. A listener emailed in about a Fox News Show over the past few weeks in which space made up part of the show. The Fox News panel seemed to be traditional in nature and felt our space program was a mess and declining. Bob spoke to his usual position in that he does not want any government space program. Tony called from Seattle to talk more about reusability & the problems with the SpaceX first effort on this on a prior launch. In the second segment, we mentioned the role of satellites in looking for Flight 370 and Bob talked about rescuing people and such programs in general. We asked for suggestions for new space topics for discussion and Bob himself suggested underground oceans on Enceladus & LADEE's results from the Moon for lunar dust experiments. We talked about the emerging cubesat industry, Dream Chaser, then near the end of the show, I asked Bob for an update on the White Nose bat fungus problem. We talked about the possibility of space being a topic in the 2014 congressional elections and Bob spent lots of time telling us all why SLS was no good. Visit his website, www.behindtheblack.com. Please post comments/questions on The Space Show blog above. You can reach Bob through me or his email address at the end of his bio.

We welcomed Randa and Rod Milliron back to the program to discuss their successful March 29, 2014 Common Propulsion Module Test Vehicle launch plus updates on the overall Interorbital Systems (IOS) s progress. In our fist segment of this 91 minute program, we mainly talked about their recent launch which Randa and Rod took us through step by step. Lots of questions came in via email by listeners and later on by phone calls. Some of the questions focused on the PR given the John Frusicante’s (Red Hot Chili Peppers) album ENCLOSURE (The Record Collection, Malibu) payload which was incorrectly described by the non-space industry media. We also talked about IOS getting a Class 3 waiver for the launch & what that process involved. Rod took us through technical and design aspects for the rocket and we also talked about the larger Neptune Modular Rocket System that the company is developing for orbital spaceflight. Also of interest to listeners were the IOS TubeSat and CubeSat do it yourself kits which include a launch when the kit is completed. As we learned, IOS is rapidly filling up their third planned launch for these kits. Another point of interest was their upcoming launch for this summer which will be a guided launch for the first time. Both Randa and Rod talked about being vertically integrated and making and doing all the parts and engineering in house. One email listener asked for their plans to go suborbital and then orbital. Another listener inquired about the do it yourself satellite kits pricing & ease of building. Before the segment ended, we talked about the IOS plans for ocean launch. Neb called in from Bosnia to talk about the IOS success throughout Europe and the positive impact of the musical payload. In the second segment, we talked about IOS ITAR requirements, the number of payloads per rocket, the ongoing plans for a lunar mission, nuclear propulsion, and their guidance system. Neb call again from Bosnia to talk about how IOS was inspiring people around the world. Randa gave us an update on the plans for Olav Zipser to skydive from a rocket, then Doug emailed in to inquire about how the diameter of the common propulsion module was determined. Randa & Rod also talked about their future plans for visiting Venus. Don't miss this discussion. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis to the program to discuss 3D Printing and Contour Crafting which Dr. Khoshnevis invented. For more information, visit www.contourcrafting.org, www.craft-usc.com, and www.bkhoshnevis.com. In our first segment of our 1 hour 45 minute discussion, Professor Khoshnevis provided us with an overview of 3D printing, its history, strengths and weaknesses. He also took us through the three main methods of fabrication and their subsets. We talked about state of the art manufacturing processes and several times during our discussion he said 3D printing would never replace modern manufacturing which would always develop along the cutting edge in advance of 3D printing techniques, processes, and speed. He talked about the materials being used for the printing and the strengths and weaknesses of them. We began talking about 3D printing in aerospace and he talked specifically about "layering." During this segment, he told us how he started looking for new processes for printing large structures which is what contour crafting is so good at doing. He explained contour crafting in construction and he identified multiple specific uses for it. Since he had already talked about how slow the process was with 3D printing, he made a point of saying that contour crafting could be hundreds of time faster than just regular 3D printing. In talking about aerospace, he explained why logistics can be a problem. Later in the segment, we talked about the significant power needs even in space, plus the high use of water. Because of the water, he told us about substitute methods that made it possible to not use water. He said meaningful structures could be made such as habs. He fielded several listener questions, including some that asked about 3D printing being a magic solution, especially for space applications. In the second segment, our guest was asked about the impact of microgravity and radiation on contour crafting and 3D printing. Doug called in and talked about inflatable structures rather than construction of structures. Our guest offered Doug important observations about the inflatable structures. We also asked about the high demand for water by these printing processes. Behrokh said that water usage might be a problem but by using sulfur and insitu resources, there would be alternatives to water. A listener asked him if a spacesuit could be printed. Our guest said not likely giving the reasons for that thinking. We talked about 3D printing of food, medical supplies & medicines. As we were ending, I asked the professor for the level of interest his students show in the contour crafting and 3D printing fields. His response might surprise you. Post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog above. You can email our guest through his websites or me.

Remember, if you buy Dwight's books through the One Giant Leap Amazon portal (instructions are above, on the blog, and on TSS website as well as the OGLF website), Amazon makes a contribution to The Space Show/OGLF. Among our discussion topics was Skylab and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP). Dwight took us through the challenges of bring us live TV from these orbiting missions. He went over the challenges and at one point, he said that both were much harder than doing TV from the Moon. Dwight talked about the declining public interest in these missions, camera and technical modifications, and what was involved in bringing us color TV from orbit. He received questions about Skylab's return to Earth, the differences between NASA and the Soviet space agency and program, especially over being open & transparent. In the second segment, we talked about the ground stations needed to receive the TV signal, the role of West Germany, the video cameras, and the use of pre-recorded video for broadcast back to Earth and on TV later rather than real time. Regarding Skylab, Dwight told us about having a rescue vehicle available and he responded to questions about solar activity that played a role in Skylab's early return to Earth. Dwight was asked several questions about the ISS and our current program with listeners wanting to know was carried forward to the current programs & what evolved from those of the past. Regarding Shuttle, he talked about a noticeable attitude shift within NASA around risk averseness & other issues. We also talked about the CD that comes with the book as it has unique videos of the missions on it. Please post your comments/questions to TSS blog. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomes Kevin Heath, CEO and President of Waypoint 2 Space, a new human spaceflight training company located near JSC near Houston, Texas. Visit their website for more information, www.waypoint2space.com. While our program was 90 minutes and covered two segments, since we talked about Waypoint 2 Space in both segments, along with their training program and plans, this summary will cover both segments as one. We started our discussion with Mr. Heath providing us with an historical overview leading up to the creation of Waypoint 2 Space followed by the why of starting this business. One of the important points made early in the discussion was the fact that Waypoint has received the FAA Safety Approval which is important, especially for the platform customers. Kevin then went over their training plans and programs, explaining that they will have three main programs, a Level 1 Spaceflight Fundamentals; Level 2 Sub-orbital Training & Level 3 Orbital Training. Waypoint also has a Commercial Payload Specialist Program which was explained to us. Our guest went through the special equipment they have and will acquire as Kevin made the point throughout our discussion that Waypoint provided comprehensive spaceflight training. As you will hear, the programs are being implemented as the markets appear. For example, the Level 3 Orbital Training Program will be delayed until there are orbital flights available for their customer base. Kevin talked a lot about spacesuits in the training, having sizes for their customer base, and he described more regarding their comprehensive spacesuit training. He also talked about making Waypoint broad to appeal to and serve a large and diverse market. When asked, our guest went over the physical requirements for the program along with the guidelines for one's health. Listeners asked lots of questions, including wanting to know if training for focus, calmness, and on psychological concerns was part of the training. Others asked questions about the training per se, space sickness, competition, and of course the pricing. The price for the Level 1 Program is $45,000 & Kevin spent some time discussing pricing with us. Later we learned that Waypoint has expansion plans that may even include a foreign type of franchise at various spaceport locations around the world. Kevin was asked about special lunar or Mars mission profile and settlement training, plus I asked him if he used space tourism market studies in his creating the business. Our guest had much to say about this particular subject. Others wanted to know about class size, registration, & possible NASA endorsements to the training. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can reach Kevin Heath through the Waypoint website or me.

We welcomed Dennis Wingo back to the program to discuss his ideas as stated in his Space Ref Op-Ed of March 6, 2014, "The Path Forward In American Space-2014 Edition." Check http://spaceref.com/the-path-forward-in-american-space---2014-edition.html. During the first segment of our 1 hour 46 minute discussion, Dennis began with a space program historical overview going back to JFK, James Webb, early space policy, and the FY 1966 peak NASA budget. He was making the case that budget problems are not the sole cause for problems in our space policy. Instead, government, NASA and policy makers are choosing programs to spend money on and space has shown a sharp decline in prioritization over a long period of time. Dennis talked about the three programs consuming large amounts of NASA's budget but with strong congressional support: ISS, the James Webb Telescope, and SLS. He says we muddle along not having sufficient funds to do any of these project properly so he makes the case for SLS and & ISS working together to maximize the potential benefit of each program. When asked if the Russian political problems might be a game changer for Commercial Crew, he said it was possible but too early to tell. During this segment, Dennis elaborated on this idea with information, facts, and assumptions. He then shows how such a plan can produce practical benefits for the American people, a must in modern day space programs. He also talked about Silicon Valley and their investments in commercial space companies and what this means to the industry. In the second segment, we talked about needed American public support and ways to influence policy makers, congressional leaders, etc. We also talked about the media, the specific science and space media, and problems with it. Dennis mentioned the upcoming comet flyby of Mars and its potential impact on people. Check out Comet Siding Spring. Dennis was asked for his action plan to help implement his idea, then he was asked for his thoughts on international participation and for his level of concern over the Chinese lunar program. He concluded saying that American citizens needed to see practical benefits from our space program, that inspiration, spinoffs, etc. had not worked all that well over the decades as space program drivers. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can contact Dennis directly or through me.

ExploraLab is a program where you can create your own experiment, fly it to the stratosphere in a balloon & have it returned to you. Home-1, the Human Optimized Modular Environment program, seeks to improve human life by improving housing with technologies that are also beneficial off Earth. The SHIM-1progject, the Satellite Humanitarian Imagery Mission, strives to purchase real-time and archive satellite photos for humanitarian efforts including emergency relief organizations and international human rights watchdogs. During this segment, Adam explained how these programs work, how they are funded, and how the benefits are shared with those designated to receive the benefits. SpaceUnited is a nonprofit organization that not only uses space technology, it implements space missions such as the three programs described above. Listeners asked several email questions to explain the programs and also to inquire as to possible future programs. Adam mentioned that for now, everyone associated with SpaceUnited was on a volunteer basis but that would change when warranted by company operations and growth. In the second segment, questions about space tourism & other technologies came up. Adam talked about a future program to bring internet service to poor nations around the world via satellite. He said this was a long term goal for the company. A listener email asked him to compare and contrast SpaceUnited plans with those of Facebook & Google to deliver worldwide wifi. Later in the segment, we talked about the SpaceUnited blog and their use of Google + hangouts for a weekly interview show each Tuesday at 11:30 AM Mountain time. These sessions cover topics such as asteroid mining, nanosat issues and more. To find out more about these half hour programs, visit http://spaceunited.org/blog. Later, we talked about their store and his offer to listeners to win an IPhone case over the next two weeks. You can see the cases at www.cafepress.com/spaceunited/10837486. Another product they offer is the mushroom kit (http://spaceunited.org/back-to-the-roots). As we were nearing the end of our discussion, we talked about the impressive SpaceUnited Board of Advisors and Board of Directors, plus I asked him for their 3-5 year plan for growth and new projects.
