We welcomed Caed Aldwych to the program for a 1 hour 42 minute discussion about his company, Global Space Organization (GSO). You can learn more by visiting their website at www.gso-space.org. In the first segment, Mr. Aldwych, who is the Commander of GSO, provided us with an introduction to GSO, why it was created, and what the company vision is all about and what makes this a unique company in its approach to engaging in commercial space. Our guest spent some time putting forth the traditional commercial space models in play with other companies but did not think these models were sustainable. He then spent time telling us about the GSO action plan, marking the differences from traditional commercial companies and letting listeners know how GSO intends to bridge the gap to make sure what they do vis a vis the Moon will be sustainable. Part of the plan Caed talked about focused on partnerships with other companies and uniting together to accomplish common and mutual space goals. When asked for a timeline for lunar development with financing in place, he estimated about a decade. During our discussion, Caed stressed that he was not looking for investment money at this time. He strongly believes in competition for space services and products and that competition will help his company reach its goals. We also talked about the need for a permanent base on the Moon with a settlement, habitats, and real commercial, revenue generating business. You don't want to miss his first segment discussion on just why GSO is different from other commercial space companies. In the second segment, we started off with our guest describing the GSO membership program, including membership fees which for the present are not being collected. When membership fees start being collected, they only apply to membership matters, not the commercial space plans of the company. Caed was asked about the Roman terms used for the board and officers. Later, he reiterated the part of the GSO plan for the company to stand out and to be noticed and recognized on a global level. He was also asked about ITAR and their plan for global relationships, plus his thoughts on Inspiration Mars and more on Mars One which he talked about in the first segment. Listeners wanted to know about GSO plans for selecting lunar crews and as you will hear, members comprise the priority list for crew members and employees. Toward the end, I asked him for his time line action plan from 2014 to 2020. Post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog URL. Mr. Aldwych can be reached through the GSO website.

We welcomed Dragos Bratasanu who was with us from Bucharest, Romania, to discuss his film project, "The Amazing Future & You." Find out more about the project and our discussion at www.successengineer.org. During our 1 hour 26 minute discussion, Dragos provided us with his personal background and story that led him to this project and his goal of helping to facilitate optimizing performance for individuals and organizations in all types of business environments, including the space business environment. Through his personal experiences and interviews with successful people around the world, Dragos has put together a program to share this information with others and he introduced us to his work and the program during today's Space Show program. In our first segment, not only did we get the background leading up to this program, but Dragos took us through the basics of the program step by step. Listen closely to the main points, the conditions, and parameters to build success in your business. Listeners asked several email questions about the steps and methodology involved and this helped to clarify the program Dragos was introducing to us. In the second segment, Jack asked Dragos if his film identified and addressed the biggest problem areas with solutions. Don't miss the response to this question by our guest. Next, Dragos talked some more about the concept of failure, what it means, and how best to deal with it, especially in the context being discussed in his film project and interviews with successful leaders and businessmen and women. Later in response to Patty who wanted to start a bookstore as a secondary business, Dragos spoke to the need to pursue one's inner purpose and the need to be in line with your values whatever the business being pursued. Next, we talked about the difference in the story for yourself as to why and how you do the business but the need to have a different story for your customer that addresses customer needs. By way of example, he cited one of his own experiences involving a climate change story to help him accomplish his goal. Dragos again stressed the need for these stories to always be in harmony with your values. Near the end of our discussion, a listener asked if space and technical businesses were harder than the non-technical business. He was also asked about differences in nations, cultures, and to adapt cross culture and across boundaries. I suggest you sign up for his newsletter on his website to stay informed and up to date with future interview information and story releases. Post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog above. Dragos can be reached through his website or me.

During the first segment of our 90 minute program, Bill told us about his press conference and briefing with Elon Musk, the CTO from SES, the company sending the first GEO bird to orbit on the Falcon 9 on Monday afternoon, 11-25-13, and Ms. Shotwell of SpaceX. Most of the first segment was spent discussing the press conference, the comments about the launch made by all participants, the challenges of doing the first GEO launch for the new Falcon 9 V1.1 and more. Not only did Bill go over the details of the launch and the SES satellite orbital insertion, plus the Falcon 9 plans for second stage firing and getting in position for the satellite to take over for its part, we talked about SpaceX launch costs, we compared the Falcon 9 costs as best we could to the Arianne and the ILS Proton costs. Bill was asked about the thoughts of the Falcon 9 competition and what it might mean for a SpaceX success with their first GEO launch. Also in this segment, Bill was asked about Inspiration Mars, SLS, & Orion. Other topics included space settlement, suborbital flight, Virgin Galactic, robotic missions, and the why that justifies HSF. As the segment was ending, a listener asked about the Florida space coast economy and its economic recovery. In the second segment, Bill was asked if SpaceX was creating a new market or taking market share from the existing competition. We talked about NASA story telling for a better space policy, the JFK legacy, & space being treated by many as a luxury. I asked Bill about the private sector being able to kick start space industry development and Bill responded with information how hard space was, especially orbital space which requires speeds of 85 football fields per second. Dream Chaser and its recent accident were discussed and there was lots of listener support for Dream Chaser as there was from our guest. More was said about the potential market for suborbital tourism and flights. Bill was asked about the biggest change over the years in his covering space issues and he said it was the change in politics. I asked him about his reporting during both Challenger and Columbia. As the program closed, Bill was asked about the ISS, commercial development for the station, and the need to keep the station going beyond 2020. Post your comments/questions to The Space Show blog above. You can email Mr. Harwood through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Dr. Don Flournoy to the program to discuss the upcoming SunSat Design Competition (www.nss.org/news/releases/NSS_Release_20131028_SunSat.html). Information about the SunSat Design Competition, the guidelines, prizes and all the details can be found at http://sunsat.gridlab.ohio.edu/node/7. During the first segment of our 1 hour 25 minute program, Dr. Flournoy introduced us to the International SunSat Design Competition along with the concept of Space Solar Power (SSP). We talked about the competition, the role of the NSS and also the SpaceJournal which our guest edits, www.spacejournal.ohio.edu (The Online Journal of Space Communication). Specifically, Don referenced Issue 17, then later Issue 16. He talked about the need to do proper story telling in a visual format, the need to have your design be technically doable, and include a business plan. He described the top prizes of which there would be a few at $10K each. We went over design contest logistics, due dates, the guidelines which are on the above URL and more. Don then talked about the fundraising involved by the competition, the need to raise sponsorship dollars, crowd funding, and more. One listener asked if an entry could focus on the launch problem related to SSP. Yes, that was acceptable. We talked about the rectennas and he pointed us to an article about this which was posted on Issue 17. Randy wanted to know if the policy aspect could be an entry since that would be short on the technical component. Again, yes since policy and legal are clearly part of the solution to implementing SSP. Demo projects came up, especially in reference to nanosatellites and cubesats. Don told about the presentations that take place at the ISDC meeting in May. We talked about other countries interested in SSP& their role in the competition. In the second segment, we started with a call from Seth who is member of Don's Advisory Board. Seth had additional information about the competition to share with us, plus he talked about the overall educational value of the design competition and work that Don was doing with his students and the online journal. Don referenced his work with non-technical students, the need to do visualizations for the project, and the work coming out of the Grid Lab. Don told us about the course he teaches which focuses on creative visualization for science & technology plus how to use social medial. Our guest was then asked about the potential impact of a demo project and how that might change the project development timeline. Near the end of the program, Dr. Flournoy was asked about using the Moon for SSP, then he again went over the requirements for entry, including the need to include a business plan. As we were ending, a listener asked him about outreach efforts to policy makers, Congress, staffers,& others, plus their overall interest in SSP. He was also asked about his student's reaction to the competition and the overall idea of SSP. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog per above.

During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, David Brain, and I talked about the Maven mission from its recent launch to its orbital insertion at Mars in approximately ten months. We talked about its trajectory course to Mars, its mission to answer questions about what happened to the water on Mars and in the Martian atmosphere, to find out if the water went up to space or down inside the planet or to the polar ice caps. Dr. Brain was asked about the instrument package and sensors to better understand how Maven accomplishes its mission. Another topic was the ten year mission for Maven as a relay communication satellite for rover data back to Earth but only a one year mission for the atmospheric studies. We learned that if the scientists think it is warranted after the year is up, they can apply to extend the science mission. We talked about the Indian Mars mission also on the way to Mars and arriving a few days past Maven's arrival. Please post any comments/questions you might have on The Space Show blog. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. Welcome to this special Space Show Classroom program with Dan Adamo, Dr. Logan, Dr. Jurist, and myself. There was no break during this 2 hour 21 minute discussion which at times was very technical. For those of you interested in missions to Mars, orbiting space infrastructure including depots, Earth & LEO departure points, mission and launch trades, payload issues and trades, radiation concerns, and more, you will find this discussion to be extremely informative and educational. Guest Dan Adamo took us through the charts and graphs which you can access on either The Space Show Blog or The Space Show Classroom blog ((see http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com and http://spaceshowclassroom.wordpress.com). Access the document ReuseForMars to follow the MP3 audio transcript. The other document on the blogs is a longer white paper version of the .pdf we used for last night's discussion. Dan introduced the topic to us, talked about his tangential work in this area at JSC last summer and the space community interest in orbiting infrastructure, especially fuel depots. Dan then took us through the .pdf document discussing and explaining each chart and graph. Rather than report on his page by page discussion, note that Jim, John, and I asked lots of questions per each chart and graph as did listeners by email and later in the discussion by phone. Some of the main points and take aways from this discussion focused on inclination, launch location, penalties and advantages relating to orbiting infrastructure reuse for Earth departures to interplanetary destinations. For example, Russian launch sites are far to the north and will not be as efficient for Mars launches as sites to the south. But as Doug discovered when he asked about equatorial launches, they benefit from a boost due to the inertial rotation of the Earth for higher initial launch speed, but otherwise there is no real benefit from the equatorial launch because minimum Earth orbit inclination is imposed by interplanetary geometry. Another important point had to do with the reuse of orbital infrastructure. As you will hear, it's virtually worthless to reuse infrastructure in low Earth orbit to support Mars mission departure, including a depot, unless it can be repurposed for something else other than a Mars mission. Don't miss Dan's explanation of this. While we talked about Earth departure windows for Mars at two year intervals, we learned that not all these windows are equal. Here, using the tables in Dan's document, we were able to see just how unequal the Earth departure windows can be. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back to the program Dr. Young K. Bae to discuss his award winning research and work with Photonic Laser Thrusters (PLT) and his Photonic Railway concepts. During the first segment of this 90 minute program, Dr. Bae provided us with the background for his interest in PLT and just exactly what it was that he was working on. Do note that PLT would be for in space use, not for launching out of Earth's gravity field. Dr. Bae's discussion is somewhat technical so it might help be following with his website, www.ykbcorp.com and the article about his NIAC award, http://www.nasa.gov/spacetech/niac/2013phaseII_bae.html. He talked about the use of mirrors, ISP, chemical rocket fuel comparisons, and more. In terms of technology readiness levels, its not there yet but it is evolving. Dr. Bae was asked to describe his four-step developmental plan to achieve human interstellar flight using PLTs. Briefly, the four steps are 1) Development of PLTs for satellites and NEO manipulation, 2) Interlunar Photonic Railway (a two-way multi-stage PLT system), 3) Interplanetary Photonic Railway, and 4) Interstellar Photonic Railway. He discussed each step in some detail. We also talked about faster than light travel and time lines required for PLT development. We learned than interstellar PLT travel is maybe a century or more away. Going to the Moon would be about ten years away. Dr. Bae spoke for the need of a commercial return to make the projects viable. Based on this discussion, we talked about the role for government and the private sector in space and technology development. Additional topics in this section included Silicon Valley criteria and mindset, the old Bell Labs, NIAC, and writing scientific papers that do not add to the bottom line. Joe wanted to have a definition of his Photonic Railway so Dr. Bae went into more detail on this concept. In the second segment, Dr. Bae was asked to talk about the new NIAC as opposed to what it was like before when it was shut down. Dr. Bae offered a great before and after comparison. Listner Ben asked about PLT competition and this took us into a discussion on high powered lasers. Pooley called in with questions and comments about the collector and the deceleration process plus the reflectors. Both Charles and Dr. Bae spoke about the earlier work of Dr. Robert Forward. Charles also asked about formation flying. Near the end, Sally asked about Advanced Soft X-ray Technology, then we talked more about fusion, and finally Barbara wanted to know when you know it is time to pull the plug on your research and move on. This was a great discussion, don't miss it. Post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. You can contact our guest through is website.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Jamie Guined to the show to discuss her new business start-up which is offering the first ever professional credential designed to provide fitness professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to support commercial spaceflight aerospace and the related medical team, the Spaceflight Fitness Specialist Credential (www.launch-fitness.com). During the first segment of our 1 hour 32 minute program, Jamie talked about her exercise physiology and science background, some of the work she does in this and related fields at NASA JSC, and why she decided to set up this credentialed program. Jamie spoke about the physical conditioning problems of the general public and chronic disease which largely goes unmanaged. She explained how this can show up in human spaceflight with the space tourists flights about to happen and the general public going to space rather than only well trained military and government astronauts. In discussing the purpose and reach of her new program, our guest was asked if the program provided training for mental issues in an emergency. Here she referred to another guest from earlier this year who does have such a program. We learned that her credentialed program is for exercise fitness professionals, not the end user. Listeners wanted to know if her credentialed program might be overkill for suborbital flights and I asked about applying the NASA information on exercise physiology, say with bone loss and osteoporosis, to the general public not interested in space but needing physical therapy or an exercise routine to mitigate bone issues. Heather called in to ask Jamie what she thought the ideal attributes would be for the fitness expert seeking certification. Doug called in to talk about FAA and DOT physical exams & adopting the information to lifestyle management medicine. They talked about stress tests, counter measures, and centrifuge studies. In the second segment, Jamie talked about her five year business plan and the need to understand the functional movement of the spaceflight candidate. We spent some time talking about functional movement and body limitations. We also learned that Jamie does screening for those interested in coming to Houston for a day or so to be evaluated. We also talked about the specific of the credentialed program which will be made public shortly. Its an online course with a year to complete and a written exam at the end of it. Jamie pointed out the use of credible accreditation organizations for the certification, we talked about working with people outside the U.S. and any potential differences. Jamie mentioned Americans as leading the pack in hypokinetic disorders. Near the end, our guest was asked if the certification program had mitigation strategies for avoiding space sickness. To read the rest of this summary visit www.thespaceshow.com or http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Thank you.

We welcomed back Frank White to discuss Overview Effect updates, President Kennedy and space given we are approaching the 50th anniversary of his death, and the impact of The Overview Effect on space policy. During the first segment of this 1 hour 31 minute program, our guest spoke about the new movie Gravity and how it relates to The Overview Effect. Frank provided us with a comprehensive overview of this movie which had both good and bad elements in it. He also talked about many of the film's reviews, even three reviews that focused on the film missing the boat re The Overview Effect. Frank applauded the film for conveying the concept that Earth was a fragile oasis, even a lifeboat of types but that Earth was not depicted in the film with imagery to portray an overview like effect with our home planet. Frank also talked about the characterization of the Sandra Bulloch character as typical Hollywood stereotyping. Frank mentioned the Overview Effect film on Vimeo - http://vimeo.com/55073825. He also talked about a YouTube film from their Harvard University presentation - www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X_fhLIPydE. Near the end of the first segment, Frank was asked about having interviewed suborbital tourists and others from the suborbital industry or if he focuses only on orbital space. In our second segment, with the 50th anniversary of the assassination of JFK coming up, Frank talked about his recent book, The New Camelot to show the relationship of Camelot and King Arthur to JFK and space. In our discussion, Frank detailed the connection he made to understand and then explain these relationships. Later in the segment, a listener asked if Mr. White knew of any leaders of any nation that applied Overview Effect leadership anyplace in the world. The answer was no but we talked about ides for virtual political leadership space summits and even an Overview Effect training program for would be federal election candidates. Near the end of the program, Joe in Billings, MT mentioned the fact that at the Rocky Mtn College astronaut panels I chaired earlier this year in Billings, the three astronauts were not familiar with The Overview Effect and said they did not experience it. Frank had much to say about this response and some of his interviews, especially around the use of the word spiritual. In his concluding comments, Frank urged us to never give up on our ideas or getting them transmitted through society. If you have comments/questions for Frank White, please post them on The Space Show blog above. You can email Frank through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

Remember, your Amazon Purchases Can Help Support The Space Show/OGLF (www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm).During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Paul, Gordon, and I talked about the upcoming Chang'e 3 mission to land a lunar robotic probe on the Moon with a scheduled launch of Dec. 1, 2013. Dr. Spudis described the instrument package, the proposed science to be done, the payload capabilities of the launcher setting the stage for future Chinese lunar missions, and the absence of an American lunar program. Both John and Gordon expressed concern that the Chinese space program is part of their military and they asked several questions detailing their concern with China and a possible military space program. I agreed with Paul when he said the biggest concern he had was the fact that the U.S. was not in the game, abdicating leadership to the Chinese and others. We also talked about the power supply for the Chang'e 3 mission hardware and surviving the long and very cold lunar night using batteries.
