We welcomed Alan Boyle back to the show for this 1 hour 42 minute discussion on numerous space news items & topics. During our first segment, Alan talked about the "two year rule" which suggests space tourism & suborbital commercial flights are just two years away. Throughout the program Alan kept suggesting that 2014 might be the end of the two year rule! Alan gave us an overview of the spaceflight companies building vehicles. Our next topic was the Yamato Meteorite, a Mars meteorite that may indicate past life on Mars. He compared this to the 1996 meteorite announcement and said that some of the Yamato team members were the same as those addressing the 1996 "discovery" (www.nbcnews.com/#/science/space/tiny-blobs-tunnels-meteorite-revive-debate-over-life-mars-n38431). In talking about Mars, I brought up the Viking experiments by Dr. Gil Levin , then a listener emailed in a question about the UK Tom Bower book on Branson, "Behind the Mask." Georgia followed with a question about the forthcoming NASA commercial crew down select, then I asked Alan for his view of SLS. Alan said it definitely had a role to play. Allison called from her car to inquire about private space stations & microgravity issues. In the second segment, we discussed Planet Labs & their recent launch of cubesats from the ISS. Alan also explained how the cubesats were launched from the station, plus since he had seen some of their images, we got a report on image quality. Todd emailed in a additional question about cislunar transportation/lunar settlements. Alan had several questions pertaining to what would actually be done in a lunar settlement. Elon Musk & his Mars plans came up and we spent a few minutes talking about that subject. Alan said the biggest dud story of 2013 in his opinion was Comet Ison. John called from Ft. Worth & I queried him again on SLS but he actually wanted to discuss Mars & present day capabilities. He then talked about the need for advanced propulsion for Mars flights. He said he would back off his SLS support had there been plans for a second generation shuttle, depots or something that would be a real program. He said SLS was a real program & any program was better than no program. Alan then said he was looking forward to 2015 with New Horizons, Dawn, & SpaceShip2. He also mentioned the ESA Rosetta mission, then as the show was ending, he was asked about the Chinese lunar rover. The final question from Sara was about the value & importance of human spaceflight. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. Follow Alan on www.facebook.com/NBCNewsScience and www.nbcnews.com/id/3033063.

This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcomed back Dr. Madhu Thangavelu to discuss current graduate student design projects from his most recent USC class which had a theme dealing with NEOs and mitigation strategies. During the first segment of this 1 hour 41 minute show, Dr. Thangavelu focused on the future of the ISS, lunar exploration and settlements, a bit on Mars but mostly on NEO issue and surveillance of dangerous items. He summarized several of the student projects for us including one referred to as "Trojan" asteroids and another referred to as "space rocks to take care of rocks." Also in this segment we talked about nuclear rocket technology and propulsion, asteroid mining, and Directed Energy devices. For the latter, we spoke about the ease of using the technology as a space weapon. Toward the end of the segment we discussed how to enroll in Madhu 's class, especially if you are not a USC graduate engineering student. Our guest summarized the segment saying that planetary defense will happen and his class helps to train and condition creative minds to deal with the problems. In the second segment, Professor Thangavelu received a listener question about Earthship Houses and the Cal-Earth Institute. Madhu also spoke about the recent NASA NIAC Conference held at Stanford University. Regarding the conference, he spoke about many of the keynote addresses and speakers, plus extremely innovative projects. One such project was Contour Crafting which he said was now in Phase 2 (see www.contourcrafting.org). Another listener went into more detail with him on the USC application process to attend his class, then Madhu went back to sharing more with us regarding the NASA conference. He said keynote speakers were from MythBusters, Google, SETI, SSI, and Dr. Pete Worden of NASA Ames. Late in this segment, he talked about the space business model with Elon Musk, Stratolaunch, and more. He fielded a few specific questions on asteroid mining which he did not think was ripe for investor action at this time. He was asked about green technologies & the student design projects, then about his upcoming article in the Journal of Space Philosophy. One of the last topics was the introduction to us of co-robotics, suggesting we check it out at the National Robotics Initiative ( Google co-robotics for more information). Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. Dr. Thangavelu can be reached through me using drspace@thespaceshow.com.

For those listening to archives using live365.com and rating the programs, please email me as to why you assign a specific rating to the show. This will help me bring better programming to the audience. We welcome you to today's 2 hour 15 minute Open Lines discussion covering a wide range of topics. Since both segments of the discussion overlapped and covered the same topics, this summary will not be divided into the typical part one and part two segments. At the beginning, I threw out some possible discussion topics. These topics included my thoughts on the cubesat market becoming saturated due to the very low barriers of entry. This typically happens in the business cycle leading to failures, buyouts, mergers, etc. I posed the question if this could happen in the cubesat industry. I also commented on the FATW issued to Mars One deeming it a suicide mission. These seemed to be the two most frequently discussed topics on today's show though SLS and Falcon did enter the discussion. Regarding the cubesat industry, most callers thought that cubesats would not go the way of traditional businesses with low barriers to entry because the launch side of the industry has a choke hold on deployment of cubesats and so far does have low barriers to entry. The reasoning went something like this: One could have all the cubesats in the world they wanted but only so many can get launched per year and this puts limits on the potential cubesat market. Many callers and a few email listeners had much to say on this discussion during the entire program. Now as for the FATWA issued against Mars One deeming it a suicide mission, that too was a popular topic. Many listeners commented on it as did I though I suggested it probably did not matter since I'm a skeptic that the venture will ever launch, especially given the stated time tables it is working against. But there were lots of views on the FATWA. Most listeners agreed that Mars One would likely be something on the order of a suicide mission but calling for a FATWA seemed extreme. There were several sarcastic comments and SLS John objected to why we would even spend time talking about it given all the important things going on in space and the space related world. Later in the second segment, Jeff called in and extended the discussion to SLS which is always volatile on TSS! Jeff offered us some interesting observations and "givens" regarding SLS as a government program. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog above. You can reach any of our callers through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

We welcomed Liz Kennick back to the show to talk about Teachers in Space (TIS), their new 2014 programming, and their upcoming spinoff from The Space Frontier Foundation later this fall. During our one hour discussion with Liz, we talked at length about the Teachers In Space two summer workshops, the Flight Experiment Workshop and the Space Medicine & Human Factors Workshop. Liz went over the teacher qualifications which include being a U.S. Citizen and a U.S. high school STEM teacher. The workshops are free but so far the teachers selected for the workshops are responsible for their own travel and expenses. Spots for these workshops are limited so if you are a qualified teacher or know of one to recommend, applications need to be submitted early. Liz believes the website application process will be available before the end of February so please check the Teachers In Space website for more details, http://tis.spacefrontier.org. Liz also talked about workshop graduates having two different experiments on the ISS or headed to the ISS. We talked about this process in some detail and she explained the two experiments to us. Clearly, the high school students and their teachers are engaging in quality and meaningful research!. Liz also talked about their relationship with both The Space Frontier Foundation which will be ending this fall through a TIS spinoff and Embry Riddle University in Florida. Another partnership that TIS has formed is with Waypoint2Space, a spaceflight training center that has started up near NASA JSC near Houston. Waypoint has its FAA approval. For more information, visit their website at www.waypoint2space.com. Liz received several questions inquiring about working with both students and teachers. Here, we learned that TIS is focused on the STEM teachers to work with students. She was also asked about space tourism, orbital space tourism, cosmonaut training, and getting flights for the Pathfinders once the suborbital companies start flying. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog URL above. You can reach Ms. Kennick through the TIS website or me.

We welcomed back Doug Messier, Managing Editor of ParabolicArc.com for this 1 hour 43 minute discussion. During our first segment, Doug talked about the proposed Google space program involving up to 1,600 satellites for global communication and wifi. Doug shared with us as much information as was currently known regarding this program, plus he talked about the Loon Project and explained why he referred to the multiple satellite program as "Son of Teledesic." While no launch vehicle has been identified Doug and listeners did talk about the possible impact launch services needed for such a large program. Doug also reported on Masten Space Systems. He also talked about Masten in the second segment. Many listeners sent in emails about the proposed Google program, some expressing skepticism, some wanting more information. Doug then turned his attention to Virgin Galactic and he talked about their powered test flights, engine issues, possible hybrid replacement engines, and more. We talked about the signed up Virgin passengers and PR efforts to keep them informed of Virgin's progress. Doug also briefed us on XCOR and the Google Lunar XPrize contest. A listener emailed in about the decline of the California aerospace industry and state regulatory issues. Doug had much to say about this. Before the break, a listener asked for an update on Stratolaunch. In the second segment, Doug talked about the management changes at Virgin given three executives have left in recent times. In addition, he said some of the lower level employees were sending out resumes. In response to a question, he updated us on Virgin's Launcher One. We talked about Dream Chaser test flights, the name change at Dryden, & the NASA Ames name. Near the end he gave us a brief report on Garvey Space, then Dr. Lurio called in and they discussed at length the Virgin hybrid engine issues, vehicle modifications, & the possibilities for a replacement engine. Topics: Update on developing RLIP 76 as a radiation countermeasure drug as we as for possible use in space. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back Dr. Curt Bilby, CEO of Terapio ( http://terapio.com), to update us on progress with the radiation countermeasure drug RLIP 76, including its potential use to combat and reduce space radiation risks. We had a one hour update with Dr. Bilby which started with the basics of RLIP 76 which is a naturally occurring protein in the human body. Dr. Bilby went through the basics with us, told us that since he was last on the show, they have stabilized the shelf life of the product by being able to store it as a white powder and then when needed mix it with saline. He described the pathway in the body by which RLIP 76 works which is really a supplement to what the body already produces. We talked about their experimentation and testing under what is known as the FDA Animal Rule which he explained in detail to us. He also talked about toxicology studies as well as the type of radiation used in testing the product by the independent testing labs at the University of Indiana and Maryland under the management of the NIH. We discussed the potential uses for RLIP 76 which are prioritized for first responders and those injured but it does have a potential application for space. Listeners asked our guest several questions about its potential use in space, on the way to Mars, on the surface of Mars, and even on the lunar surface for a lunar settlement. At one point later in our discussion, I suggested that being able to use RLIP 76 on a lunar settlement a decade or so out might be the first use of it if we escape a nuclear accident, nuclear terrorist attack, etc. He said such a first usage would be a dream come through as it would mean there were no nuke accidents or attacks and we had a settlement on the Moon! We did talk at length about the two types of animals used in the testing, plus moving to human trials and what information is sought from the human trials. We also talked about production and manufacturing for RLIP 76 and I asked if they had future plans for outsourcing the production to another country. Near the end of our discussion, Dr. Bilby went through the four phases of testing with us as required by the FDA. We also talked extensively about the FDA Emergency Use Authorization for any drug and a listener wanted to know if a Mars mission could apply & be approved for using RLIP 76 as part of their life support mission planning. Just as the show ended, Doug sent in an email asking about the probability of NASA increasing the amount of radiation allowed if the crews used RLIP 76. Dr. Bilby answered him by saying pharmaceuticals might change the profile & exposure levels as current standards are for unmedicated crews. But it was far from certain & NASA might not be the determining agency on the matter. Post your comments/questions on TSS Blog. You can contact Dr. Bilby through me or his website.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back Dr. John Jurist for this two hour discussion on all aspects of artificial gravity. Note that Dr. Jurist prepared presentation material for this program which you will find on the archived blog entry for this discussion. Also, I recommend you read the excellent article by our UK guest, inventor, & friend, Robert Walker, "Can Spinning Habs Solve the Zero g Health Issues? Can Humans Live in Mars or Lunar g? Why Nobody Knows." (see www.science20.com/print/129424). During our first segment, Dr. Jurist introduced us to the basics of artificial gravity including the Coriolis effect, the gravity gradient & the info needed from in-space artificial gravity R&D. Several studies including one by UC Irvine were mentioned, plus other bed rest studies. He also talked about the Wyle Centrifuge studies which used a short arm for experimentation. Our attention turned to the presentation material on TSS blog titled "Artificial Gravity Comments--JmJurist." Dr. Jurist took us through the tables & charts on his two page document. He was asked about gender & age differences with gravity as well as small rodent/mammal ISS experiments now or in the future. Our first caller was John from Ft. Worth who clarified some of his comments from the last Open Lines show plus he talked about the hardware, infrastructure, & engineering issues for in-space experiments. We talked about the use of tethers & the relationship with microgravity & radiation issues. With our caller still with us, Jenna emailed asking if either Mars One or Inspiration Mars would provide the needed research that never seems to be done by NASA or others. In the second segment, Doug from S. California called. He talked about his T frame tetherball type structure concept as an interim artificial gravity tool but said it was not a long term solution. He also inquired about tethers, then he wanted to know about the mass of possible tether cables as well as potential materials that could be used for in-space tethers. Doug then described a reference mission using a long arm centrifuge for the surface of the Moon. Doug described a very good concept and Dr. Jurist had much to say about it. We had quite the discussion on possible implementation strategies and the roadmap from theory to operations given our current policy & economic environment, plus the track record on other large projects that never made it. With Doug on the phone, Ft. Worth John emailed to inquire about stability issues and tidal forces on the tether. Both Dr. Jurist & Doug made a pass at providing John an answer to his question. In his closing statement, our guest went over some basic advantages with a tether, the problems of the gravity gradient & the fact that the issues for colonization were very different than for experiments or a reference mission. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above. If you want to reach Dr. Jurist or our callers, do so through me.
