We welcomed Darrell Preston to the program to discuss his article for Bloomberg News, "Billionaire Musk Gets Brownsville to Pay for SpaceX." You can read the article at www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-02-12/states-competing-for-spacex-by-offering-financial-breaks.html. Our discussion with Darrell as well as his article explains how Elon and SpaceX got Texas and Brownsville to compete with offers and benefits to get SpaceX to build a launch site near Brownsville. As you will both read and hear, Texas is competing hard for space businesses to come to the Lone Star State. Its an interesting story. In my opinion, "enlightened" states understand the benefits of going after commercial space companies for the future of their state. Please post any comments/questions you might have on The Space Show blog. You can contact any of us through drspace@thespaceshow.com.

Add this to another station Mark Bray, Tuesday, 2-11-14 (100.37MB; download) -- Guest: Mark Bray. Topics: Huntsville area space update, SLS from the inside, U.S. space policy, leadership issues. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back Mark Bray for a Huntsville space area update and a unique view from the inside on SLS and U.S. space policy. In the first segment of our 1 hour 49 minute discussion, Mark shared his personal assessment of the Huntsville area space economy, the moods of contractors and NASA workers, & the space IQ for the Huntsville general population. For the most part, Mark reported stability but lots of uncertainty. In contrast, the last time Mark did an area update for us, there were still layoffs happening, lots of uncertainty and personal stress, and stability was far from the scene. We then switched to SLS which was a topic through most of the show because Mark is a contractor working on SLS. Its important to note that Mark was speaking for himself on the program, not for his employer, NASA, or his fellow workers and area space employees. Mark works in the SLS materials lab so we asked him all sorts of questions about the big rocket. For example, I drilled him on the mood of SLS workers given they certainly had to know about the hate-love war going on over SLS within the space community. Mark answered all these questions for us, including questions about possible competitive pressure from SpaceX. We talked extensively about commercial space development and the need for commercial markets. Mark spent some time on the issue of markets because without them, one has no viable commercial activity. Mark then honed in on the problem of political leadership regarding space saying that NASA and related organizations were not the problem. This opened the door for multiple discussions during the balance of the program going after what Mark and I both thought was an absence of quality political leadership in the country and the partisan warfare between the two main parties preventing workable solutions for many if not all the nation's problems. Before the segment ended, I asked Mark about the Chinese lunar lander & robot and what people thought about it. He said most were frustrated that we (the U.S.) was not doing more as we were not operating even close to our potential. In the second segment, Doug called to ask about public/private partnerships, COTS like programs, and he talked about his Lunar Cots ideas. Doug asked about reducing costs. Mark seized the opportunity to again state that engineering technology & NASA management were not the real problems but that leadership issues in Washington were at the center of the problems. John then called from Ft. Worth. He wanted to talk about SLS cost numbers & asked Mark why it was so expensive given the assumption that much of it came from already developed projects including Ares components and more. Don't miss what Mark had to say about this. To see the rest of this review, visit www.thespaceshow.com or thespaceshow.wordpress.com.

Add this to another station Dr. Armen Papazian, Monday, 2-10-14 (86.55MB; download) -- Guest: Dr. Armen Papazian. Topics: Dr. Papazian presented his ideas and theories for investing in space based on wealth, not debt. We welcomed back to the show Dr. Armen Papazian to further discuss his innovative and groundbreaking money mechanics of space theory along with his having received the Alpha Centauri Prize Progenitor Award for his space economics work. You can read more about the award, his theory and body of work at www.keipr.com. Several times during our 1 hour 34 minute discussion, Dr. Papazian referenced his Cambridge University Business School Nov. 2013 presentation, "Our Financial Imagination and the Cosmos" which is at www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/media/2013/our-financial-imagination-and-the-cosmos. During our first segment, Dr. Papazian introduced us to his space economic proposal which is to invest directly in NASA and space commerce by creating money through wealth, not by debt which is the traditional way of getting investment money into the banks to circulate it to industry. As this theory may be difficult to understand, the first segment was devoted to describing how the system proposed by our guest would work, the use of Public Capitalization Notes (PCNs) rather than debt securities, and for the Fed to directly invest in NASA and the space industry about half of their monthly QE3 financial support going to the banking industry. This would put abut $40 billion per month in the hands of NASA and the space industry as wealth investments, not debt. Listeners asked our guest several questions to help understand the proposal, if the plan added to inflation, and to understand just how the PCNs would work. In the second segment, we continued the discussion but listeners also wanted to know more about the plan which seems to bypass the banking industry. Dr. Papazian explained that the banks were not bypassed but that the money would flow to them differently. Instead of from the Fed to be loaned out as debt, NASA and the businesses would get the funds direct as explained in the first segment and then the money would go to the banks in the form of deposits. Remember that the banking industry leverages deposits with reserve ratios to increase their money supply to make loans so by the direct wealth investment in space, banks are still very much part of the process. During both segments, we talked about the advanced technology regarding the space investments yet they were constrained by out of date financial methodologies and instruments. Not only would this new space money mechanics increase space investment, it would also be used by NASA for more education. Also mentioned during both segments was the traditional economic concept of scarcity. Our guest spent lots of time debunking scarcity, especially with space given the vastness of the solar system, stars, all of space. As you will hear, the reality of our environment is that it is not based on scarcity so why should our methods for creating money be based on scarcity. Please post your comments/questions on TSS Blog per above. You can reach Dr. Armen Papazian through me or his website.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Rick Tumlinson back to the show for this 1 hour 53 minute program to discuss Rick's commercial space ventures, space advocacy, NASA, space development and exploration challenges & methods for moving the "revolution" forward. In the first segment, Rick opened up with updates for Deep Space Industries (DSI), asteroid mining, NEO defense, and more. We also talked about Rules of the Road and possible industry regulation that the FAA is now talking about. Much time was spent on possible NEO impacts. We also started discussing the "opposition" to commercial space and new space directions over traditional aerospace programs and directions. Following our discussion regarding DSI, we turned to another of Rick's entrepreneurial companies, Orbital Outfitters. Rick talked about their new & advanced spacesuit design version IS3, their opening R&D offices in Midland, Texas, plus he mentioned upcoming news with which the company will soon take public. I asked Rick about modern day advocacy hurdles as compared to when the Space Frontier Foundation was first started. This provoked lots of interesting comments and discussion points that crossed over into the second segment of our program. However, he did say it was harder now so don't miss the discussion and talking points. In the second segment, we talked about the overall Texas commercial space development strategy, possible new spaceports for Texas, and their understanding of how the space industry is changing and becoming profitable. We also talked about his most recent Huffington Post Op-Ed which will appear within a few days which was a reply to a Slate.com article by NYU Journalism Professor Charles Seife titled "What Is NASA For." You can see the article at www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/mysteries_of_the_universe/2014/02/nasa_s_mission_its_search_for_meaning_has_limited_its_science_and_damaged.html. While Rick pointed out the problems with the article, he also talked about the author's perspective being valid. Don't miss this discussion. We also talked about public/private partnerships with Doug & the need to be commercially profitable. Lots was said about HSF to Mars and Deimos, plus returning to the Moon. Rick also talked science & robotic missions along with HSF missions. As the program was ending, Rick talked Big Picture with us and being caught up in space advocacy battles & the path forward. He talked about culture, space exploration & development benefits for all of humanity, benefit sharing, and more. He repeated many times that we are at the cusp, a turning point, a paradigm change moment. Please post your comments on TSS blog. Rick provided his email address for contact during the show or you can reach him through me.

We welcomed Dr. Tom Matula back to The Space Show for a 1 hour 46 minute discussion about Tom's concept for space settlements known as astrosettlements. His Power Point presentation given at the ISDC 2013 has been uploaded to The Space Show blog for your review. In the first segment of today's program, I started out asking about one of Tom's previous theories, the Space Development Bank. From there, we jumped to astrosettlements which Tom believes will be market driven so we discussed some of the market factors that could drive these settlements. Astrosettlements are orbital and would be designed for 500 to 1,000 inhabitants. He listed three characteristics for the astrosettlements and we discussed each one. The three included the need to be autonomous, mobile, and expandable. Doug called from S. California to talk about and clarify market demand. This led Tom to discuss the potential of the SpaceX Dragon Lab. He also talked about suborbital with his understanding that the killer part of suborbital would not be space tourism but instead atmospheric research. I asked Tom for timelines for the astrosettlements and he said 2-3 decades. This sparked further discussion. When I asked for the starting point to develop the astrosettlements, Tom said we would need to develop virtual world models. This resulted in a rather comprehensive discussion of modeling in the virtual world with Charles calling in to disagree across the board with our guest. In the second segment, I read a lengthy email from Carl in San Antonio that deal the lunar development, the Moon Treaty, Common Heritage of Mankind and benefit sharing issues. Don't miss this discussion. Paul Turner both emailed in and called regarding how to profitably develop real estate in orbit, and why it is financially sustainable. Paul has a book coming out on this topic so we will hear more about this later on. More timeline questions came up regarding astrosettlements and the potential early market drivers which might include intellectual property, early materials manufacturing, and raw materials. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show Blog URL above. Tom has a blog you should check out, www.wealthofspace.com. You can reach Tom through me or his blog.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back Chris Carberry to this special one hour program to discuss the recently concluded Explore Mars Workshop, "Affording Mars" that was held in early December 2013. Chris explained the purpose of the workshop and we talked about the conclusions and the plans to move forward and build upon the success of this program. To learn more about this workshop, visit www.exploremars.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Affording-Human-Exploration-of-Mars-1-12-14-final.pdf. Listeners asked questions about defining affordability, advanced propulsion for Mars, the use of SLS, and if Inspiration Mars and Mars One contributed to their efforts. You might be surprised by his answer to this last question. At the midway point, we switched to other programs in play for Explore Mars, Inc. Visit their website for information on the programs we discussed plus other information on this organization, www.exploremars.org. In particular we talked about the upcoming legislative blitz in Washington, DC plus the April main conference, Humans 2 Mars Summit 2014. While the conference will be in Washington, DC, it will be live streamed and we can all watch it wherever we are around the world. One of my questions to Chris was how in a very short time, four years, he has built and made Explore Mars one of the most credible advocacy organizations and policy influencing organizations. I also commented on the quality of their programming, attendees, speakers, all of it. Chris did provide an explanation for this which I think all of us could benefit from. Listen to how he said they communicate and work with others, even those opposed to Mars. As I said, we could all learn from the Explore Mars playbook. We also talked about robotic, science and human missions and how all are needed working together. Chris also talked plausible timelines for HSF to Mars. Post your comments/questions on TSS blog. You can reach Chris though the Explore Mars website.

We welcomed Jim Crisafulli back to the show for this 90 minute discussion of space development, exploration, and education in the State of Hawaii. As the same discussion topics were part of the entire program, I am summarizing this show is if there was one segment despite our having taken a break for segment two about halfway through the program. Our discussion started with my asking our guest about the space industry in Hawaii and to identify some of the unique advantages Hawaii offers space businesses, programs, organizations, and academia. Mr. Crisafulli talked at length about the strategic advantages for enhancing space exploration and all aspects of space development, including NewSpace programs and the expansion of commercial space. Mr. Crisafulli talked about R&D, education outreach including K-12 education. We also discussed in some detail specific programs such as the Real World Design Challenge to inspire future scientists, engineers, educators & entrepreneurs for the developing & rapidly evolving aerospace community. Rob Kelso called in as we started discussing the PISCES Program (Pacific International Space Center for Exploration Systems) as Rob is the Executive Director. Most of the balance of the first segment Rob updated us on PISCES programs given he was last a guest on TSS on June 21, 2013. We also highlighted the history of PISCES which got its start in 2007. As PISCES and other Hawaiian space projects and programs take place on all the islands, we got a good overview of all that Hawaii offers in all aspects of space development and exploration. After the break, while still discussing PISCES and educational projects, we talked about the Hawaii Spaceflight Lab located on the Manoa Campus of UH (www.hsfl.hawaii.edu/wordpress/about) and the proposed spaceport for space tourism for horizontal takeoff & landings. Hawaii analog sites for lunar and Martian missions were talked about as were Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), a Tri-state Agreement with Alaska & Oregon, laser communication development and much more. As our discussion was ending, we talked about the upcoming space conference to be held in Hawaii in October of this year. More info about the conference as it becomes known. Please post comments/questions on TSS blog above. You can email Jim or Rob of PISCES by going through me or their organization websites.

Please direct all comments & questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments & questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. Welcome to this two hour one minute Open Lines discussion on what turned out to be mostly about artificial gravity. While there were actually two breaks in this program, since the topic was the same throughout the full show, I am archiving this as a single segment summary. We started the program by my making announcements, then reading parts of an article that recently appeared in the Turlock Journal (www.turlockjournal.com/section/26/article/23874) that talked about the green efforts by actor Leonardo DiCaprio but also pointing out his having arranged to be an early passenger onboard SpaceShip2. The author of the article, Dennis Wyatt, then pointed out the hypocracy of Mr. DiCaprio by examining the carbon footprint of SpaceShip2 & comparing it to cars & other things, pointing out the enormous consumption and carbon footprint that will be unloaded on Earth by Mr. DiCaprio's flight. I read parts of the article to point out the hypocracy among those that preach to us to do as they say yet they seldom if ever walk their own talk. I also mentioned articles in the informative menu of The Black Bear Diner Gazette from their Emeryville, CA menu, one of which was an old news article saying that NASA Administrator Thomas Paine predicted & had a goal of doing a HSF mission to Mars by 1981-82. Some of the callers for today's discussion did offer comments on both the DiCaprio article as well as wondering if we could have gone to and from Mars with astronauts back in 1981-82. However, by far, the topic of the day was artificial gravity, a topic which really surprised me. The callers and those sending emails wanted to talk about artificial gravity, their understanding of it, how to achieve it, their analysis of it, and more. The callers talked 2 RMs, 3 RPMs, 4 RPMs, we talked about some of the comments by the life scientists on this subject on previous shows, much of which was discarded by the callers who had a focus on engineering and physics and their own perspectives. We also talked about the difference between partial gravity & full 1 g artificial gravity. I mentioned that many were unsure that 1 g of artificial gravity would be the same as 1 g here on Earth but that was quickly discarded by all callers and those sending in emails. Our callers also talked about experiments that should take place using free flyers adjacent to the ISS to study some of the artificial gravity questions in preparation for long duration human spaceflight. Because of the unexpected interest in artificial gravity, I have decided to arrange for updated programming on the subject with "experts" representing aerospace medicine, life scientists, engineers that would be designing space based centrifuges, and more. I will be announcing these programs as they are scheduled & they will appear in the weekly newsletters. Please post your comments/questions for this show on TSS blog above. You can reach any of the callers to this program by sending your email through me at drspace@thespaceshow.com.

Add this to another station Dr. Dava Newman, Friday, 1-31-14 (55.98MB; download) -- Guest: Dr. Dava Newman. Topic: Dr. Newman's BioSuit positive pressure space suit project. We welcomed Dr. Dava Newman to the program to discuss her positive pressure BioSuit spacesuit project at MIT. During our 1 hour 1 minute single segment program, Dr. Newman took us through a brief history of positive pressure spacesuits up to and including her BioSuit version 4 project. For more information, please visit these and other websites: http://web.mit.edu/aeroastro/www/people/dnewman/bio.html; www.bostonmagazine.com/news/blog/2013/12/10/mit-biosuit-system-dava-newman; http://mvl.mit.edu/EVA/biosuit and http://esd.mit.edu/Faculty_Pages/newman/newman.htm. We covered many topics, fielded numerous listener email questions, and learned much about the BioSuit as well as traditional spacesuits. The history started with Dr. Paul Webb and his efforts from the early 70's (Dr. Webb was a guest on TSS on Sep.t. 17, 2006), then we talked about the progress in materials, designs, and engineering leading up to the BioSuit. Dr. Newman explained how flexibility and movement were possible in the BioSuit, how this reduced the amount of energy expended by the astronaut, and even reduced some of the thermal needs. We also talked about repairs of the suit, then we spent much time talking about the life support and EVA pack plus the helmet. As we learned, joints and concave parts of the body like the back of the knee do present problems but they believe they have solutions to these challenges by using special materials to fill in the void spaces. At one point, Professor Newman was asked about needing different suits for orbit, the Moon, and Mars. As we learned, the basic suit is the same for everything but depending on the mission, different life support and EVA packs would be available. Then we talked about a suit for inside the vehicle or the ISS, the Variable Vector Suit. Questions came in about how the suit works, closes up, and suit economics compared to the costs of traditional spacesuits and EVA suits. Questions about radiation protection, lunar dust protection and more was asked, plus we talked about the possibility of using the basic BioSuit for space tourism flights providing the tourist is not outside the spaceship. During our discussion, Professor Newman went over many of the pressure issues and requirements plus other technical issues for this suit. We also learned that it could be made operational within 2-3 years of full up funding. Please post your comments/questions on TSS blog above.
