We welcomed Charles Miller back to The Space Show for this 1 hour 31 minute program. During the first segment, Charles talked about the future of commercial space, extending the life of the ISS, managing risk and uncertainty to maximize returns and benefits for commercial space, plus he used the company he co-founded, NanoRacks, as a commercial model utilizing the national lab ISS. We talked about commercial crew, the success of the Space Act Agreement for contracting and pockets of congressional resistance to the commercial and Space Act programs. In discussing commercial opportunities on the ISS, we also talked about CASIS and the role it is playing in bridging the gap and facilitating commercial companies using the ISS. Charles then talked about his company, NexGen Space LLC and he referenced the DARPA XS-1 Reusable Spaceplane. A listener asked our guest about a possible influx of commercial opportunities from outside the U.S. In response to this question, Charles talked about competing cultures and why the U.S. is so strong with its culture of innovation. Commercial crew, human spaceflight, and the need to spend 6 months training in Russia were discussed with the latter being an impediment. Suborbital demand was a topic as were the commercial efforts by Boeing, Sierra Nevada, ATK and other mainstream aerospace companies. In our second segment, we talked about Kickstarter and the use of crowd funding in the emerging commercial space industry. Innovation and low cost space access were key topics and themes for this segment. Listener Jack asked about space entrepreneurial management teams & what to look for in a quality team. I asked Charles to tell us where he thought the industry would be in ten years. Charles talked about small satellite constellations, far more affordability across the board, and a large growth space tourism industry. He also mentioned that the turning point will come when we have cheaper access to space than today. Toward the end of our discussion, Charles was asked for his suggestion for the best path to pursue for those seeking commercial space careers. In response, he talked about getting real hardware and flight experience & mentioned high schools that provide this experience. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog per above. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. Please visit www.davidbrin.com for more information & his books, www.davidbrin.com. We welcomed Dr. David Brin to the show for this 1 hour 9 minute wide ranging discussion on a variety of topics. Dr. Brin started by summarizing his background, then we talked about starships and the story he wrote for the book "Starship Century," The Heavy Generation. We talked about this science fiction story without giving away the ending and Dr. Brin said he might later turn it into a full book. Dr. Brin then talked about fairness and other society interests, some on gender differences, wastefulness of talent, plus the need to err in favor of the stated even if it was false. Listen to his explanation of this. This took us to somewhat of a political discussion regarding the state of America, science, the media, education, and more. We spent lots of time talking about science, scientists and criticism, and he explained that when he write a book, he circulates it to 50 people for harsh criticism, not flattery. Dr. Brin also talked about competition with science, suggesting it to be a highly competitive field. He talked about the upcoming Personhood Beyond The Human Conference he will be speaking at in December at Yale University regarding personhood status for dolphins and chimps. What he had to say might surprise you. Listeners asked about our media, a topic Dr. Brin had much to say about. He was also asked why it was so difficult for society to value space and its importance to our future given what we in the industry believe we know and understand about space. This was part of the overall science and media discussion. Another topic was adult science literacy. Surprises await you in this discussion. Dr. Brin had much to say about cynicism, being negative, and not understanding the gifts we have as a society and nation, and the importance of being uplifting and associating with uplifting people. We talked about Mars One, Inspiration Mars and learned that he had signed up for Mars One to help further the discussion but does not believe the mission will happen. He is supportive of Inspiration Mars but believes the launch window is too close and that the project should have started 10 to 15 years ago. We talked about space colonization, the best way to go to Mars for settlement, Apollo 8 as an inspirational model & how uplifting things are in other parts of the world such as India. Invention and creativity were also discussed and he noted that since 2001 inventing was lacking. Inventing is uplifting & we need to start inventing again in this country. Post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. Dr. Brin can be contacted through is website.

Add this to another station Drs. Michael Schmidt, Thomas Goodwin, Sunday, 9-22-13 (47.97MB; download) -- Guests: Dr. Michael Schmidt, Dr. Thomas Goodwin. Topics: We discuss the recent published reviewed paper by our guess, "Personalized medicine in human space flight: using Omics based analysis to develop individualized countermeasures that enhance astronaut safety and performance." Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. Written Transcripts of Space Show programs are a violation of our copyright and are not permitted without prior written consent, even if for your own use. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed both Dr. Michael Schmidt and Dr. Thomas Goodwin to this 1 hour 28 minute program to discuss their findings represented in their recent published & reviewed paper, "Personalized medicine in human space flight: using Omics based analysis to develop individualized countermeasures that enhance astronaut safety and performance." I've posted this paper on The Space Show blog and I urge you to read it as I believe it will the way of the future for human spaceflight astronaut safety and enhancement. We started our discussion with Dr. Schmidt stating the problem(s) with astronauts in the extreme space environment, longer mission duration stress, plus other factors. Dr. Schmidt followed by Dr. Goodwin then explained and discussed personalized medicine in human space flight and the use of Omics analysis. Their work was also applied to the emerging space tourism industry as well as for suborbital missions. Regarding the suborbital flights, the interest seems to be more with the pilots who will be making many trips to space rather than the participant who will likely be doing it only once. Our guests put forth the reasoning for personalized space flight medicine, we talked about the capabilities to do this screening and the studies today, what will be near term and what we can expect over the longer term as technologies develop. Listeners asked about conventional mitigation strategies such as shielding, exercise, etc. Our guests pointed out that they were not talking about eliminating the usual mitigation strategies but tailoring needs to an individual's DNA and genetic makeup since individual astronauts may have genetic and DNA differences that will respond better to a customized mitigation. We talked about varying degrees of DNA stability & unstable DNA. Much was said about the effects of RX medications and drug profiles. In our second segment, we talked more about the suborbital flights and the interest in the pilots due to their repeat flights. We talked about targeted RX medications for an individual, how medications are metabolized & how that might actually differ in the astronauts leading to customization. Doug asked about a type of primate ISS experiment regarding fractionalized gravity. Listeners also wanted to know about adding mass and cost to a mission due to personalized space flight medicine which as you will hear, was not the case. In the concluding comments, our guests pointed out that personalized space flight medicine was going to be the future of human space flight. Personalized and target DNA and genetic medicine is already starting to happen here on Earth so its extension to space is only natural. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. You can contact our guests through me.

Space Show programs can be quoted, but the quote must be cited or referenced using the proper citation format. Contact The Space Show for further information. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Dr. John Cramer to the program to discuss his chapter in the book "Starship Century." Dr. Cramer titled his chapter Exotic Technologies for Interstellar Travel. Remember, if you purchase this book using The Space Show/OGLF Amazon portal, Amazon will contribute to The Space Show. Instructions for doing this are in all archived program summaries on our website and our blog. Dr. Cramer's website is http://faculty.washington.edu/jcramer. During the first segment of our 90 minute discussion, Dr. Cramer talked about his chapter, interstellar spaceflight, exotic technologies, and the Quantum Grounded Theory. He mentioned James Woodward and his work with Mach's Principle. I also asked him about the level of interest expressed by his students in interstellar travel and we talked about timelines for realizing interstellar travel. Our guest said we needed breakthroughs and the progress in 100 years would depend on realizing key breakthroughs. Dr. Cramer suggested that our challenges were still in the fields of theory as we needed much better understandings of lots of things associated with interstellar travel. The issue of space settlement came up in terms of Mars and deep space. We also talked about worm holes but we spent more time on that subject in the second segment. I asked if finding the Higgs-Boson was helpful. Dr. Cramer had much to say on this as well as on the LHC and colliders in general. Dr. Cramer was asked about his science fiction works and his writing for Analog. We also talked about the impact of our having cancelled our collider to be built in Texas and the impact of that decision on American science for decades following that political decision. In the second segment, Dr. Cramer went into more detail about worm holes, including an explanation of the "back reaction" issue. Later, we talked about timelines, budgets and our political funding process. Near the end of the program, NASA was discussed as was our reliance on large rockets. Dr. Cramer said we would need to get away from rockets and propulsion thrust if we were to do anything with interstellar travel or deep space. At the end, he was asked about ET based on the comments Dr. Davies made on his interview earlier this week. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog URL above. You can email Dr. Cramer through his website.

Topics: This was a wide ranging discussion starting with climate change & ending with budget, CR, & commercial crew issues. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. We welcomed Bob Zimmerman back to the show for this one hour 55 minute discussion starting with the announcement regarding climate change and the upcoming IPCC report which has been leaked to the press. The primary topic for this first segment was climate change, the leaked IPCC report and an analysis of it. Bob fielded listener comments and questions including Marshall's who had hands on experience with the very first computer climate model in the early 70's. Bob summarized all his comments saying that science needed to be skeptical and he was optimistic that skepticism was coming back to the field of climate science. We then switched to space and NASA for the balance of this program. As a transition, Bob talked about solar activity and the solar max. In response to a listener question, he commented that if Mars or anyplace in space were developed using the Antarctica model, it would doom commercial space activity. He stated over and over again that the model needed was the profit model for space and planetary development. In the second segment, we talked about new commercial contracts for Arianne 5 recently announced, and how important these were to Arianne who needs to show a profit for the first time. I asked Bob about NASA's Redirect Asteroid Mission given all the attention it got last week at AIAA Space 2013. Bob had much to say about this mission, most of it not supportive or positive, and then I mentioned the NASA press conference which is archived as part of the Space 2013 taped interviews and the fact that it is to be SLS dependent. This started Bob and others on SLS rants, mostly not supportive of it, and also Orion. Bob was emphatic that Orion with SLS would not be a deep space mission & at one point he cited comments by Russian that their next generation Soyuz would have bathroom facilities on board and Bob said with Orion, it was strictly diapers for the crew. We talked about Inspiration Mars and Mars One. Bob was skeptical about both happening. Listen to the reasons he cited for his perspective. Bob also talked about Bigelow Aerospace and its potential, listeners asked about Planetary Resources and the Redirect Mission, then we talked about the need to lower the launch costs to LEO. Bob brought us current with SpaceShip2 & the latest powered demo flight, then John called in to argue about SLS with Bob. This was an interesting give and take. As Bob has done on other programs, he continued saying he does not want a space program which is a government program which in his eyes is doomed to failure. He wants the private sector to prevail. As the show was ending, I asked Bob for this thoughts on the budget, CR, and future commercial crew funding . Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. Check out Bob's website, www.beyondtheblack.com. You can email bob through is website or using zimmerman at nasw dot org

Add this to another station Dr. Paul Davies, Monday, 9-16-13 (31.82MB; download) -- Guest: Dr. Paul Davies. Topics: Interstellar travel, microbiology, cosmology, Mars, and much more. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Dr. Paul Davies to this 65 minute discussion about his contribution to the excellent book, "Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon." Other topics included interstellar travel, microbiology, human spaceflight, Mars, ET and much more. We started our discussion with his Afterword in the "Starship Century" book and I asked him about his comments regarding microbes. One quickly learns from reading his Afterword that it is not the propulsion and engineering that presents the greatest challenge to interstellar travel but what happens to essential microbes needed for life in microgravity and the space environment. We learned that even in LEO such microbes can transform and become toxic to life. This is a fascinating microbiology discussion regarding deep space missions to Mars, the Moon, and long interstellar travel. Don't miss what Dr. Davies said about microbes as it opens up an entirely new study in human factors for human spaceflight. Other issues we talked about included planetary contamination, microbial ecosystems, figuring out the minimal needed for sustainability regarding the good microbial environment. Also, what microbes are crucial and those that might be irrelevant for the spaceflight passengers as well as for animals and plants needed for sustaining the mission. Dr. Davies was asked that given microbiology being a bigger challenge than propulsion and engineering, were we close to having propulsion and engineering for interstellar travel. You will appreciate his very "witty" answer to this listener's question. Faster than light travel came up and so did the work being done around the Alcubierre Drive. Dr. Davies had much to say about faster than light travel, the speed of light, physics, and related disciplines. TO READ THE BALANCE OF THIS SUMMARY, VISIT WWW.THESPACESHOW.COM OR HTTP://THESPACESHOW.WORDPRESS.COM AND SEE THE ARCHIVE SUMMARY FOR THIS PROGRAM AND DATE.
