Add this to another station AIAA Space 2013 Taped Interviews, Friday, 9-13-13 (118.46MB; download) -- Guests: AIAA Space 2013 Taped Interviews. Topics: Recorded interviews from AIAA Space 2013 including Dr. Doug Plata; NASA Press Conference;, Michelle Evans. Please direct all comments and questions regarding Space Show programs/guest(s) to the Space Show blog, http://thespaceshow.wordpress.com. Comments and questions should be relevant to the specific Space Show program. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. Welcome to this 2 hour 14 minute set of three interviews recorded at AIAA Space 2013 in San Diego (except for the last interview). Please note there were audio issues as there was background noise both at the San Diego Convention Center and the restaurant where I met Michelle Evans for her interview regarding her X-15 book. The NASA Press Conference, while conducted in a private room, also consisted of a conference call through NASA with media reps not at the conference. Some of the participants at the table and on the phone spoke with a very low voice. The interviews follow one another with about five seconds of dead air space between each one. When the interview with Michelle Evans ends, so does our recording. We started with Dr. Doug Plata who presented two papers at an AIAA Technical Committee Meeting Monday night. His two presentations covered space advocacy unification ideas and his Lunar Cots and Cislunar transportation ideas. Doug reports interesting and sometimes challenging feedback from those listening to his presentations. And it was not all supportive of his idea. Next, we have the NASA Press Conference. As part of the background to this press conference, the keynote at lunch was a panel moderated by NASA’s William (Bill) Gerstenmaier with four other NASA participants charged with leading different parts of the NASA Asteroid Redirect Mission. At lunch, these individuals made a presentation, showed animation and video of the mission, charts and graphs, then took questions from the AIAA lunch audience. The NASA participants got tough questions about SLS, mission dependency on SLS, the use of large quantities of Xenon, and even if the civil space program for human spaceflight would disappear if this mission failed for any reason given the dysfunction many see in NASA at this time. I think you will find Bill’s response to my question about SLS issues and dependence on it for the mission to be interesting. I learned a few things about SLS and I suspect you will also learn a few things about this program. Let us know your thoughts on both SLS and the asteroid redirect mission by posting on The Space Show blog. The last interview was at a Fuddruckers Restaurant off I-5 as I was driving through Orange County on the way back to Hollywood. I met Michelle Evans and Cherie for a different type of discussion about Michelle’s excellent book, “The X-15 Rocket Plane: Flying the First Wings into Space.” Michelle was recently a guest on the program about her book. We talked about those she interviewed for the book and their thoughts on today’s current space program. I also asked if Michelle thought a program such as X-15 could be initiated today. Michelle also told us about the global interest in the X-15 as she has heard from people in Nepal, Austria, and many other faraway places. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog.

For this Hotel Mars segment, Bruce Pittman was our guest to continue the discussion from his AIAA Space 2013 Panel, “Space Exploration for Inspiration and Profit.” Bruce moderated this AIAA panel discussion of the same title. In our 11.5 minute Hotel Mars segment, we talked about advances with public/private partnerships, NASA changes in supporting and even embracing commercial space, private sector launchers with Orbital and SpaceX through COTS and Commercial Crew, plus commercial opportunities emerging with the ISS. John asked Bruce about robotics and both Bruce and I suggested it was not either or with robotics and human spaceflight but both working in sequence for the best possible space exploration and development. Near the end of the segment, Bruce mentioned funding issues as the primary challenge for our moving forward with space development and exploration. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog per above. If you want to email either of the participants, you can do so through me.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Rob Lowe to the program to introduce us to and discuss ShipInSpace, a new entry in the suborbital space tourism industry. During the first segment of our 1 hour 24 minute program, Mr. Lowe introduced us to ShipInSpace, he described their proposed space tourist flight adventure program, we talked about the vehicle, the entry and reentry g forces, the stacking system for passenger pods and the safety escape system. Rob also described a typical parabolic flight profile for ShipInSpace once it starts operations in five years. Rob answered questions about vehicle safety and certification, their two year passenger training program, the vertical launch and horizontal landing design, the hatch closure and opening procedures, plus the use of space suits for the occupants, and their pricing model which is significantly lower than their competition. Rob also addressed listener questions about ShipInSpace financing, budgets, and the start of ticket sales. Crowd funding was brought up in the financial discussion, our guest was asked about the competition not only from Virgin and XCOR but from other companies in the U.S., Canada, and across Europe. One of our listeners in India wanted to know how ShipInSpace was different from the AXE APOLLO space project. In the second segment, Rob was asked about choosing one's pod mates for the flight given each stacked pod had room for four passengers. We also learned that initially the flight frequency would be weekly but that might increase over time. Rob digressed to tell us about his book which is available on Amazon, "The Eccentric Universe." Remember, if you buy the book using The Space Show/OGLF Amazon portal (instructions are in all show summaries on the website and the blog plus the blog has a specific link to our Amazon portal), Amazon will make a donation to The Space Show/OGLF. His book sounds most interesting so check it out. Later, our guest was asked about the possibility of their using Spaceport America and our guest indicated that it was a possibility, as was the use of spaceports in Europe and elsewhere. Near the end of our discussion, Rob gazed forward with an assessment of the potential of a future space tourism and development industry, then a listener asked them about plans to move toward orbital tourism. We asked our guest about their proposed flight test program, Point to Point transportation, and a few more questions about their competition. The last listener sent in an email saying he was a skeptic and wondered about their Plan B if the marketing survey they are counting on turned out to be invalid. In response he said that the company and the spacecraft were designed to do other types of mission so not to worry. He also cited the demand Mars One has experienced in opening up the application process for their mission as solid evidence of the interest in space tourism and travel. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. You can contact Rob Lowe through my email address.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed Stan Kennedy and Maureen O'Brien to the program for this 58 minute discussion about Oakman Aerospace, cubesats, the Small Sat Conference, ITAR reform and more. During one segment discussion, Stan took us through the brief history of Oakman Aerospace (www.oak-aero.com) which just completed its first fiscal year. Oakman Aerospace (OAI) specializes in rapid and responsive, modular, open-architecture space systems which Stan discussed with us, plus more information is available on their website. We talked about changes in the small satellite and cubesat industries, the effect of sequestration which may be driving companies to more commercial options, and financial options including crowd sourcing using Kickstarter. Stan fielded several listener questions regarding the use of Kickstarter, the possibility of over saturation of the developing industry, the drive to push toward more commercial space ventures. We also talked about the importance of international participation and ITAR Reform. At one point, I asked about bottlenecks in this area and our guest cited the 1248 report. Maureen discussed the current state of ITAR reform efforts and the impact of ITAR on the smaller companies. One of the issues brought up in this discussion was the need to be able to retain foreign students and workers with a STEM background or experience so that we don't lose them back to their home country or another country. Later, a listener asked about student internships at OAI and we also learned that the company is hiring. As our program was drawing to a close, I asked about the OAI year two plans and the company five year plan. As you will hear, they are planning for growth and market share increases. We talked about their IP being one of their main products & the need for standardization. Charles Pooley called back in to over the costs required and the realistic time line for getting a secondary payload ride. This discussion supports the need for lower launch costs and for additional small satellite and cubesat launch options. Near the program's end, our guest responded to an email question about the USML and CCL regarding ITAR. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. You can contact our guests through their website or me.

Remember, your Amazon Purchases Can Help Support The Space Show/OGLF (www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm). During our 11 minute plus discussion, John, Pablo de Leon and I talked about the recent spacesuit helmet to flood with water and the associated risk for Astronaut Luca Parmitano. We also discussed design and technical flaws with the American EVA spacesuit as it was not designed to be maintained and serviced in space but to be brought back to Earth using the shuttle. In contrast, the Russian Orlan suit was designed for repairs and maintenance in space. Pablo mentioned other differences as well with the American and Russian suits. For example, the Russian suit operates at a much higher pressure causing the user to tire more easily and quicker, plus the higher pressure limits some movements. I asked Pablo about progress with the idea of the positive pressure suit but as you will hear, nothing on the near term. In fact, as our Hotel Mars segment ended, Pablo said we will be using existing suit technology and materials for at least ten more years before new materials, manufacturing processes, and concepts are able to being entering the market. In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back Sir Martin Rees to discuss his chapter in the new book Starship Century: Toward the Grandest Horizon, edited by James & Gregory Benford. Sir Martin's chapter, titled "To the Ends of the Universe," looks forward through time and centuries to address human spaceflight, eventual interstellar travel, life extension & more. In looking forward, he levies criticism on the past. We talked about several of his comments regarding our past & current space program. Dr. Rees mentioned the need for life extension though for Mars he said we could do that without life extension but we should not fool ourselves as it will prove far less comfortable than Mt. Everest or the South Pole. We talked about finding planets & the possibilities for life, then we switched to the discovery of quasars soon to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Listeners asked our guest about his comments that the political impetus for current & future space work seems to have been lost, especially in contrast to the Apollo era. In his response, our guest suggested we need low cost and reusable launch vehicles given how costly everything is today. He commented that mining asteroids did not make sense other than for ISRU purposes. Before going to break, he was asked about the UK government investment in Skylon which he supported. In the second segment, we spoke about changes in the UK space activity over the past decade. Sir Martin made comparisons with the UK, ESA & NASA, especially regarding long term planning & our very short one year budgets. He suggested our budget process makes us unreliable partners in many respects. Quasars were again a discussion topic, plus Sir Martin fielded a question from a high school student wanting to know how we know the laws of physics are the same throughout the universe. Another listener wanted to know about science fiction as a leading indicator for science. Dr. Rees suggested some excellent books for those interested in reading specific science fiction works. James Benford, editor Starship Century called to point out the excellent reading list in the back of the book, plus he offered us important comments about the book & authors.. Near the end, Sir Martin was asked to look forward 10-15 years & tell us his thoughts. His response focused on finding even more planets around the stars, identifying more threatening NEOs, & even more attention given to life extension issues. The last two questions asked our guest dealt with the ISS living beyond 2020 asking if that was valuable and also the recent podcast by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson that SpaceX would not be able to go to Mars. Throughout the discussion, he mentioned the private sector doing things government could not, especially due to less risk averseness. Please post your comments/questions for Sir Martin Rees on The Space Show blog. You can reach him through me or his Cambridge website, www.ast.cam.ac.uk/~mjr.

In addition, please remember that your Amazon purchases can help support The Space Show/OGLF. See www.onegiantleapfoundation.org/amazon.htm. We welcomed back Dr. Scott Pace to the program to discuss our space policy, leadership, the prospects for human spaceflight (HSF), and international participation. For more information on what Dr. Pace talked about today, see http://thediplomat.com/2013/03/28/american-space-strategy-choose-to-steer-not-drift and www.spacepolicyonline.com/news/logsdon-and-pace-criticize-lack-of-white-house-leadership-on-nasa. Dr. Pace stated that our national space policy was adrift which we discussed in some detail during this 1 hour 38 minute program. In the first segment, I asked Dr. Pace to explain why our space policy was and is adrift. He referred back to the 2010 National U.S. National Space Policy which he largely supported but the human spaceflight portions of it were weak. We mostly focused on human spaceflight for this Space Show program. I asked him about the forthcoming NRC Human Spaceflight Study underway for which he had several comments but said policy does not typically come from external organizations. We talked about weakness in space policy leadership both with the White House and Congress. Dr. Pace said that he believed HSF to be meaningful to our nation and our future, and he put forth the rational for this throughout both segments of our discussion. Listener Mike Listner called in to ask questions about the European Code of Conduct which is in an ongoing evaluation process among many countries. Dr. Paced talked about the concerns and benefits of the Code & I asked if at least in the U.S. the policy makers were considerate of commercial or private space (NewSpace) interests. He said they were, especially within the State Department. We also talked about humans to Mars missions, lunar return missions and Cis-lunar development. Doug called to express his concerns regarding lunar and Cis-lunar missions and at one point Dr. Pace talked about how frontier lines actually move so what may not be doable today may be doable in the near future. We started the second segment with a call from John Hunt who talked about the need to have a space transportation system before we can return to the Moon or go anywhere. This took us into the world of heavy lift rockets, Dream Chaser & routine spaceflight. We also talked about Falcon Heavy and SLS. We switched over for ITAR updates which Dr. Pace provided for us. Space as a political issue for upcoming elections was discussed as were the much talked about NASA asteroid missions. Near the end, Dr. Pace was asked about the Chinese program & their plans to do an end of the year lunar robotic mission. Dr. Pace had much to say about the Chinese space program. Dr. Pace did provide a summary for us saying that there are still great opportunities in space despite the challenges. He made an excellent case for American space leadership & why its so important for us all. Please post your comments/questions on The Space Show blog. You can reach Dr. Pace through his GWU website or through me.
