We welcomed Chuck Killian, the CapCom Coordinator and Engineering IT specialist for the MDRS to the program. Chuck was with us for the first hour of today's program. During a brief second part of today's Friday program, I spoke about my absence over the past few weeks while I was in Los Angeles and my plans to relocate, probably during the summer, and what that might mean for The Space Show during the brief moving period. With regards to our main topic, MDRS, Chuck talked about the crews, their rotation period, scientific experiments, and what life was like simulating Mars in the hab which is located near Hanksville, UT. We talked about their simulated air lock, the use of Mars suits for EVAs, including wearing a bubble helmet, the need for approval or a type of peer review for team/crew science missions, and living conditions during each crew rotation. This included food, the Green Hab for growing some fresh greens, and more. Also of interest was the limited bandwidth available to the crews and the "official" communication period each evening. MDRS is international and we talked about many of their crews from outside the U.S., including the current Russian crew. Listeners wanted to know if there were ITAR issues with foreign crews and they inquired about the cost for the two week rotation and who typically pays for the rotation. Chuck told us this was the 10th year for MDRS which was and still is quite an accomplishment. Later in our segment, I even inquired about a Space Show crew applying for a rotation. This is a possibility so as I said on air, if enough listeners let me know that they would be interested in doing a two week crew rotation, on behalf of The Space Show and OGLF, I would consider putting together such a project through our non-profit, One Giant Leap Foundation. Other topics discussed were media interviews with the crews during rotations, more about the facilities and infrastructure, and just how good a simulation for Mars is the MDRS. During our 11 minute plus discussion with William (Bill) Borucki, Space Scientist, Astrobiology and Space Research Directorate, Ames Research Center and the principal investigator of the Kepler Mission, we talked about the latest Kepler discoveries on the cusp of the habitable zone of their system, the difference due to a planet being larger than Earth, the search criteria and how it is now being extended outward, and the status of the Kepler mission in terms of achieving its mission goal of determining how many Earth twins might be out there just waiting for discovery. It’s a fascinating and information packed discussion which I believe you will enjoy, learn from, and appreciate.

We welcomed Dr. William (Bill) Farrand to the program to discuss Martian multispectral & hyperspectral remote sensing data, the same for the Earth and throughout our solar system. In the first segment of our 90 minute discussion, we talked about the Mars solar conjunction, what the rover Opportunity is doing during the conjunction, Opportunity's longevity, and why Spirit quit working. We also talked about Curiosity, then I asked our guest about both multispectral and hyperspectral remote sensing data for Mars. Dr. Farrand explained the imaging and the instruments in addition what we learn about Mars and other solar system objects through the remote sensing instruments providing us with this data. In fact, in response to a listener email, our guest talked about remote sensing data from the Messenger, Cassini, Dawn, and other missions. I asked our guest about minerals on Mars and throughout the solar system and how they might differ from the same mineral here on Earth. Doug sent in a question about trades with the science missions as compared to doing a human spaceflight mission. Our guest expanded the discussion to include very expensive science missions as opposed to more missions but lower in cost. Dr. Farrand talked about the proposed commercial space missions to the Moon, Mars, and for resource utilization. He also talked about the prize system as being a good way to further commercial exploration and development. A listener asked about getting timely data released to the public. Our guest directed us to the Planetary Data System which houses all the mission data, usually about six months after it was first obtained. In our second segment, Doug asked that if Curiosity comes up empty, might that seriously put life on Mars into doubt? Don't miss the response, it might surprise you. We then discussed Curiosity and what it was up to at this time plus more on Opportunity. As for future Mars missions, we talked about Maven and then our guest was asked if the current Mars science and robotic missions were designed to pave the way for an eventual human spaceflight mission to Mars. He said they were not so tightly linked but it’s a discussion you will want to hear. Our questions then changed to NASA economics and sequestration as our guest was asked for his thoughts on cutbacks, sequestration, moral, etc. I asked about Earth remote sensing and we talked about Landsat satellites and Landsat 8. Also the commercial World View 2 and the coming World View 3. We talked about buying commercial data as opposed to using government sourced data, plus AI, real time data acquisition and more. During our 11 minute plus discussion with Dr. Don Kessler, we talked about space and orbital debris problems, the most crowded orbits, mitigation theories and applications, plus international support in dealing with the problems cause over our global space development history. We talked about specific mitigation techniques including tethers and the Swiss proposal. When asked what the biggest problem was in terms of finding a solution, Dr. Kessler suggested funding issues. John asked our guest to define and talk to us about the Kessler Syndrome so don't miss that part of our discussion. We also talked about the role of private & commercial space in both creating more debris and in helping to clean up debris problems.

In the first segment of this 1 hour 46 minute program, we welcomed back Chris Carberry, Executive Director of Explore Mars (www.exploremars.org) to discuss their upcoming Humans 2 Mars Summit (H2M) from May 6-8 at GWU in Washington, DC (see http://h2m.exploremars.org). Chris talked about the purpose of this conference, the logistics, registration, and the speakers. We also went into some detail regarding the panels, their topics, and panel members, all of which are detailed on the H2M website. We specifically talked about Inspiration Mars in both segments, risk taking, government regulation, and the level of the public's interest in human spaceflight missions to Mars. Financing HSF missions to Mars was another topic near the end of the first segment. In the second segment, we focused on the Mars Generation Opinion Poll which can be found at www.exploremars.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Mars-Generation-Survey-full-report-March-7-2013.pdf. Here, we went over several of the survey questions and the results, including questions pertaining to human spaceflight and Mars in light of our current budget constraints, why go to Mars in the first place, should we increase NASA's budget to at least 1% of the federal budget, what are the biggest barriers to sending crews to Mars, the value of returning to the Moon as compared to going to Mars, and more. I urge all of you to check out the opinion poll as it had some interesting and surprising results, at least from my perspective. Later in this segment, a listener asked Chris about both the Mars One mission and the Inspiration Mars flyby mission. Don't miss what Chris had to say about both proposed missions. Another listener asked if Explore Mars thought human spaceflight to Mars was near term, hence the H2M Summit. Don't miss what Chris said in response to this question and his idea of a time line for a human mission to Mars. We also talked about the public's view that any HSF Mars Mission would involve the public sector, preferably with the private sector. We welcomed Dr. Joan Vernikos back to the program, this time to discuss the proposed Inspiration Mars flyby mission. In the first half of our two hour program, Dr. Vernikos said it was a doable mission but that new ideas and solutions needed to be developed for the human factors. When asked about the biggest problem, our guest said it would be the ability of the two person crew to get along and work together for the full mission. This issue came up several more times during the program so you will hear more about it over the two hour discussion. We took an early question from Dwayne about the overall air quality in the spacecraft and issues with bacteria and the air filtration. Dr. Joan had much to say about this as it could be a problem depending on lots of factors including the ability to repair a damaged system during the mission. Dr. Joan talked about life support and psychological issues along with the human factors. Microgravity and radiation issues came up but again, there was a focus on the risk of destructive & irritating behavior with the crew members. One of the recurrent themes was to look for alternative ways to develop tools and counter measures rather than doing much the same year after year which has been our history in developing human spaceflight protocols. Dr. Rowe called in to strongly suggest that such a flyby mission should be delayed until 2032, putting forth his best arguments for the delay and why it should not be attempted in 2018. Bill listed lots of medical events that could happen and which we cannot treat in space, all in support of delaying the flight until human spaceflight is better developed & we know more about it. In the second segment, Doug called & talked about regulators possibly saying the crew was intentionally attempting to commit suicide. He talked about the medical code 5150 regarding intentional suicide. We also talked about possible regulatory issues around the issuance of a launch license. Doug also talked about radiation, both within the Van Allen Belts and on the way to deep space. Next, Dr. Dilip Sarkar from Norfolk called in to discuss alternative human factor countermeasures such as yoga. Check our Dr. Sarkar's website, https://sites.google.com/site/dilipsarkar/home. The discussion of yoga for pre-flight training and to help with countermeasures was most interesting. Dr. Rowe called in several more times to challenge Dr. Joan and Dr. Sarkar on their yoga theories regarding spaceflight. I believe you will find the discussions and calls very informative. As the program was ending, Dr. Joan was again asked about the biggest challenge and she said it would be the human interaction with the crew. We welcomed back Liz Kennick to discuss the Teachers in Space program which is part of the Space Frontier Foundation and the upcoming New York City Yuri's Night party. In the first segment of our 1 hour 31 minute program, Ms. Kennick summarized her first year as the Program Director of the Teachers in Space Program (http://tis.spacefrontier.org). Liz talked about the summer 2012 workshops and the upcoming Space Medicine and Human Factors workshop to be held at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, plus the Flight Experiments workshop at the AeroInstitute in Palmdale, CA. We talked about expansion plans for Teachers In Space, their five year program, astronaut training experiences at NASTAR (www.nastarcenter.com/aerospace-training/space) and using other training means. Listeners asked lots of questions about Teachers In Space qualifications, when they would fly and on what suborbital vehicle, as well as how to apply to the program. Liz talked about building up the organization, the need for volunteer help, and the importance of getting teachers excited about space to spread the excitement to their students. One of the projects our guest discussed in this first segment was that of the TIS flight experiments regarding the 2012 Balloon launch program.
